The role, at a glance.
This is a senior, client-facing DevOps consulting role supporting production Java backend environments. The engineer will architect resilient cloud infrastructure, operate Kubernetes and Docker platforms, build CI/CD pipelines, and implement observability, security-as-code, and disaster-recovery practices. Success requires deep experience with a major cloud provider, Java/Spring Boot workloads, and event-streaming technologies such as Kafka. The role also requires strong written documentation and the ability to lead technical conversations across concurrent client engagements.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with multi-zone cluster design, separate node pools, autoscaling, health probes, and resource limits. I would deploy services through declarative manifests or Helm, use ingress and load balancing with redundancy, externalize configuration and secrets, and establish backup, failover, and tested disaster-recovery procedures.
I would include automated build, unit and integration testing, dependency and container image scanning, code-quality checks, artifact versioning, and policy gates before deployment. Credentials would be managed through a secrets platform with least-privilege access, while deployments would use auditable infrastructure-as-code and progressive rollout strategies such as canary or blue-green releases.
I would collect application metrics such as latency, error rate, throughput, JVM memory, garbage collection, and thread-pool saturation, alongside structured logs and distributed traces. For Kafka, I would monitor consumer lag, partition health, broker performance, replication status, and message-processing failures, then define actionable alerts tied to service-level objectives.
I first perform discovery to inventory applications, dependencies, data flows, access controls, current risks, and recovery requirements. I then produce an architecture baseline, phased migration roadmap, rollback plan, validation criteria, and operational runbooks, keeping client stakeholders involved through regular technical reviews.
I would clarify business impact, delivery commitments, risks, and dependencies with each stakeholder, then maintain a transparent prioritized backlog. I would communicate tradeoffs early, document decisions, automate repeatable work where possible, and escalate capacity or timeline risks before they affect delivery.
