Sample interview questions
I begin by mapping the build, test, security-scanning, artifact, deployment, and rollback stages. I use reusable pipeline templates, environment-specific configuration, automated quality gates, and progressive deployment methods where appropriate. I also track deployment frequency, lead time, failure rate, and recovery time to identify further improvements.
I would first correlate latency with application, infrastructure, and dependency metrics using dashboards, traces, and logs. I would inspect pod health, resource requests and limits, autoscaling behavior, node pressure, network paths, ingress performance, and downstream database or API latency. After isolating the cause, I would implement a measured fix and add alerts or capacity safeguards to prevent recurrence.
I maintain infrastructure in version control, use modular and reviewed Terraform or CloudFormation definitions, and separate environments through controlled variables or accounts. Changes should run through automated validation and plans before approval, with state protection, least-privilege credentials, and documented rollback procedures. This makes changes auditable, repeatable, and less prone to configuration drift.
I would define service-level indicators around availability, latency, error rate, and throughput, then pair them with infrastructure metrics such as CPU, memory, saturation, pod restarts, and database performance. Distributed traces and structured logs would enable fast root-cause analysis across services. Alerts should be actionable, tied to customer impact, and supported by runbooks.
I shift security left by automating dependency, container-image, secret, and IaC scanning in the development and CI process. I enforce least privilege, secure configuration baselines, patching practices, and monitored access while using risk-based gates for critical findings. Partnering early with developers and security teams helps resolve issues efficiently rather than treating security as a late-stage blocker.
