The role, at a glance.
Zapier is seeking a Finance Manager to serve as the embedded FP&A partner for its marketing organization. The role owns marketing headcount planning, budgeting, actuals, purchase-order tracking, channel allocation, and ROI reporting. It connects marketing investment to pipeline, ARR, and closed-won revenue while partnering with Sales FP&A, Corporate FP&A, RevOps, Data, and marketing leadership. The manager will also help govern funnel definitions and use AI to automate recurring close and forecasting processes.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with company ARR and pipeline objectives, then align with marketing leadership on channel strategy, hiring plans, vendor commitments, and key assumptions. I would build a driver-based model that separates brand and demand-generation investment, ties spend to funnel metrics and pipeline expectations, and includes scenarios for upside and downside cases. I would establish monthly actual-versus-plan reviews and clear owners for material variances.
For demand generation, I would assess incremental pipeline, conversion rates, CAC or cost per pipeline dollar, win rates, and closed-won revenue while accounting for attribution limitations and sales-cycle timing. For brand investment, I would use a broader scorecard that may include reach, awareness, direct traffic, branded search, and longer-term pipeline effects. I would clearly distinguish correlation from causality and communicate the confidence level behind each recommendation.
I would combine actuals, open purchase orders, vendor commitments, payroll forecasts, and expected accruals into a current forecast. If the forecast exceeded plan, I would identify the drivers, quantify the size and timing of the risk, and bring practical options to the budget owner, such as reprioritizing channel spend, deferring commitments, or seeking a formal reallocation. The goal is early visibility and a decision-ready recommendation rather than reporting a surprise after the fact.
I would first align stakeholders on shared definitions for leads, MQLs, opportunities, sourced versus influenced pipeline, and stage conversion. Next, I would develop a transparent model using historical channel performance, conversion lags, sales capacity, and current spend plans. I would review forecast accuracy regularly, investigate deviations, and refine assumptions while ensuring finance and operating teams use the same source-of-truth metrics.
I would prioritize repeatable, controlled processes such as variance-commentary drafts, purchase-order monitoring, data-quality checks, forecast refreshes, and recurring reporting preparation. I would keep human review over key calculations, judgment calls, and executive conclusions, especially where source data or assumptions may be incomplete. The objective would be to reduce manual work while improving speed, consistency, and auditability.

Hi there!
We’re looking for a Finance Manager to be the dedicated finance partner for Zapier’s marketing organization. This is a unique opportunity to own the full financial picture for one of the most strategically important spend areas at the company – headcount, budget, and channel investment while playing a key role in connecting marketing activity to pipeline and revenue outcomes. You’ll report into the Head of GTM Finance and partner closely with marketing leadership, working closely with Sales FP&A and Corporate FP&A to establish a clean interlock between marketing, sales, and company level financials.
About You
This isn’t your first rodeo. You have 4-6+ years of accounting/finance-specific experience, with 2+ years of working with Marketing or GTM orgs. A background in Big 4 Accounting, Investment Banking, or Management Consulting with meaningful ownership of operating expense areas
You’re comfortable owning a budget end to end, including headcount, spend actuals, and purchase orders, and communicating variance clearly to non-finance stakeholders
You have a strong grasp of channel-level marketing economics (pipeline generation vs. brand), cost per pipe, and how to connect spend to downstream pipeline and revenue outcomes
You’re comfortable with ambiguity – able to structure a loosely-defined problem yourself rather than needing it handed to you fully scoped
You have good judgment and a bias toward surfacing issues and opportunities proactively, not waiting to be asked
You actively use AI tools to work more efficiently, with the judgment to know when to go deep manually and when to lean on the tool
You’re a strong written and verbal communicator, able to turn a complex analysis into a short, clear executive takeaway with guidance from your manager
Experience with Google Sheets, a data warehouse (Databricks or Snowflake), NetSuite, Zip, and HubSpot is preferred
Things You’ll Do
Own marketing FP&A end-to-end: headcount planning, budget building, and actuals tracking, so marketing leadership always has a clear, current view of where things stand against plan
Own channel allocation analysis (demand generation vs. brand) and drive ROI-by-channel reporting
Work on sales pipeline forecasting based on spend, as part of setting GTM targets and ARR modeling, flagging risks to pipeline coverage or targets early
Serve as an embedded business partner to marketing leadership – not a once-a-month reporting function, but someone marketing trusts to think through decisions with in real time
Track purchase orders and vendor commitments against budget, flagging overspend risk before it happens
Analyze the connection between marketing spend, pipeline generation, and closed-won revenue, working cross-functionally with Sales and RevOps
Partner with the Data team to establish and govern pipeline reporting definitions (leads, MQLs, opportunities) so the funnel is consistent end to end
Use AI to automate recurring finance processes, building skills and agents that can run parts of month-end close and re-forecasting cycles
