Sample interview questions
How would you structure a scalable native iOS application for a complex customer-facing product?

I would begin by separating presentation, domain, and data concerns using an architecture such as MVVM with coordinators or a clean architecture approach. I would define clear interfaces for networking, persistence, analytics, and feature modules, then use dependency injection to keep components testable and replaceable. The final structure should support incremental delivery, reliable testing, and straightforward maintenance.

Describe your approach to integrating an iOS application with AWS-backed services.

I first clarify authentication, API contracts, error handling, observability, and offline expectations with the backend team. I implement a resilient networking layer with secure token handling, typed models, retries where appropriate, and clear user-facing failure states. I also ensure configuration differs safely by environment and that logs and monitoring provide enough context to diagnose production issues.

What practices would you use to maintain high confidence in mobile releases?

I would combine unit tests for business logic, integration tests for critical services, and UI tests for the highest-value user journeys. In CI/CD, I would automate builds, linting, tests, code signing, artifact distribution, and release checks. I would also use pull-request reviews, staged rollouts where possible, crash monitoring, and rollback procedures to reduce release risk.

How would you troubleshoot a production issue that cannot be reproduced locally?

I would start with crash reports, logs, analytics, release version data, device and OS details, and the affected user flow. I would compare production configuration and backend behavior with lower environments, form hypotheses, and attempt reproduction using matching conditions. After identifying the cause, I would implement a focused fix, add regression coverage, and communicate impact, mitigation, and release timing to stakeholders.

How do you communicate a technical trade-off to a customer engineering team?

I explain the decision in terms of the customer outcome, viable options, implementation effort, technical risk, and long-term maintenance cost. I avoid unnecessary jargon, make assumptions explicit, and recommend an option with a clear rationale. I then document the decision and confirm alignment on scope, ownership, and next steps.
