Sample interview questions
I establish clear principles, expected outcomes, and review rituals, then give designers meaningful ownership over problem framing and solution development. Critiques focus on customer evidence, interaction quality, accessibility, and business tradeoffs rather than personal preference. I use recurring feedback and calibrated expectations to help each designer grow toward greater independence.
I would begin with contextual research, including observing technicians and operations managers in their actual environment where possible. I would map the highest-frequency and highest-risk tasks, identify cognitive and operational constraints such as gloves, connectivity, time pressure, and mobile usage, and prototype a focused flow. I would validate the design with users and use product telemetry after launch to improve completion, accuracy, and adoption.
I make the underlying customer impact, business goal, and technical constraint explicit early. Together, we identify the minimum experience that preserves the essential user outcome, distinguish reversible from irreversible compromises, and sequence improvements when needed. This keeps the conversation focused on shared outcomes rather than defending individual functions.
I tailor support to each person's capability and growth goals while maintaining consistent expectations for quality, collaboration, and accountability. Junior designers may need more structured feedback and craft coaching, while senior designers benefit from strategic scope, leadership opportunities, and sponsorship. In all cases, I use regular one-on-ones, specific feedback, and documented development plans.
I would start with practical, low-risk use cases such as research synthesis, exploration support, content drafting, and prototyping, while setting clear standards for privacy, accuracy, and human review. For product experiences, I would ensure AI capabilities solve a real user problem, clearly communicate confidence and limitations, and retain meaningful user control. I would measure whether AI improves workflow outcomes rather than treating it as a feature in itself.
About this role.
MaintainX is a leading mobile-first work execution platform for industrial and frontline teams. More than 13,000 customers, including Duracell, McDonald’s, Shell, DHL and Volvo, use MaintainX to cut unplanned downtime and run better operations, across 13.9 million managed assets and 79.5 million completed work orders.
In August 2026 MaintainX became part of Autodesk, joining Autodesk Operations Solutions, the organization unifying Autodesk’s operations platform alongside Tandem, FlexSim and Fusion Operations. Autodesk’s strategy is to converge design, make and operate into one continuous lifecycle: design an asset, build it, run it, then feed what you learn running it back into the next design. Autodesk had design and make. Operate is the phase that tells you what actually happened, and it is ours.
We’re growing fast and hiring the Design leadership to match.
Our users are maintenance technicians, reliability engineers, and operations managers working on factory floors, in processing plants, and across distributed facilities. We’re looking for a Product Design Manager to lead a team of product designers who make these complex, high-stakes workflows simple, intuitive, and increasingly AI-powered. You’ll set creative direction across your team’s product areas, grow designers at different stages of their careers, and partner deeply with Product and Engineering to ensure design is shaping outcomes, not just shipping screens. In this role, you’ll be close to the work, close to the people, and accountable for both.
What You’ll Do
Own design quality across your team’s product areas for web and mobile. Guide designers through ambiguity, review work with a sharp eye, and ensure what ships is grounded in real user needs and built to a high standard.
Lead and grow a team of 4-6 product designers. Run 1:1s, drive career growth, deliver clear feedback, and build a team culture where people do their best work. You’ll be responsible for hiring, performance, and developing the next generation of design talent at MaintainX.
Translate product strategy into focused design execution. Help your team understand not just what they’re building, but why it matters. Set a clear, directional vision for your team’s focus, rooted in customer understanding and business context.
Partner closely with Product Managers and Engineering leads. Align on priorities, unblock delivery, and advocate for design quality and user needs in every conversation.
Raise the craft bar. Contribute to design critiques, invest in our design system, and ensure consistency and coherence across the experiences your team touches.
Lead your team in adopting AI tools and practices to accelerate design work and push the quality and speed of your team’s output.
About You
6+ years of product design experience in B2B SaaS or enterprise platforms. You’ve shipped complex, multi-surface work and you know what good looks like because you’ve done it yourself.
1–3 years of experience managing product designers. Running 1:1s, giving feedback that changes the work, navigating performance conversations, and helping people grow. You chose management because you’re energized by making others better.
Strong product thinking and craft judgment. You understand customer problems, business tradeoffs, and how to connect design work to strategy. You don’t simplify by removing; you simplify by clarifying.
You build trust through how you show up. Consistent, direct, and accountable. You create clarity for your team, resolve friction with partners early, and lead with enough confidence to make decisions and enough humility to change your mind.
You care about AI-powered product experiences, both in how your team designs for AI-first workflows and in how they use AI tools to push the quality and speed of their own work.
An expert level of English, both spoken and written, is required, as the individual will need to lead platform engineering managers across multiple teams, present technical priorities to executive stakeholders, and align with engineering leaders outside Québec on a daily basis.
Nice to Have
Experience with frontline, mobile-first, or offline-capable product design
Background in industrial, operations, or maintenance-adjacent domains
Experience contributing to or scaling a design system
Familiarity with designing for AI-powered workflows and data-rich interfaces
Our mission is to keep the physical world running. Factories, fleets, hospitals and campuses stay up because the people who maintain them have tools worth using. That is what we build.
Compensation and benefits. Base pay is one part of the package. Depending on the role, compensation may also include commission, an annual bonus and equity. Benefits differ by country. For roles in the United States, Autodesk’s benefits are described at benefits.autodesk.com. For roles in Canada and other countries, the plan differs on health coverage, retirement and leave, and your recruiter will walk you through it.
Belonging. We take pride in a culture where everyone can thrive. More at autodesk.com/company/global-belonging. More on where this is going: Autodesk CEO Andrew Anagnost on building the future of connected operations, and AOS SVP Stephen Hooper on welcoming MaintainX to Autodesk.
