The role, at a glance.
Fieldguide is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead full-stack development for agentic financial-audit products. The role requires hands-on daily coding while setting technical direction for complex, ambiguous initiatives tied to strategic customer onboardings and product bets. This engineer will design reliable and auditable AI-driven workflows, deciding where agent autonomy is appropriate and where human review is necessary. Close collaboration with product, design, financial-audit experts, and other engineers is central, along with mentoring and contributing to hiring. The stated stack includes TypeScript, React, GraphQL, Node.js, and PostgreSQL, with extensive use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by mapping the audit workflow into discrete decisions, inputs, outputs, and control points. I would use agents for bounded tasks with measurable outcomes, preserve source evidence and decision traces, add confidence thresholds and validation layers, and route material or low-confidence decisions to human reviewers. I would also define evaluation datasets and operational metrics for accuracy, latency, failure modes, and reviewer override rates before expanding autonomy.
I first establish the customer outcome, constraints, risks, and irreversible decisions through focused conversations with product, design, and domain experts. I turn unknowns into explicit assumptions, run lightweight technical spikes where needed, and propose a phased plan that delivers value early while preserving flexibility. I communicate trade-offs and decision records clearly so the team can move forward with alignment rather than waiting for perfect certainty.
I create a clear target architecture and identify the few principles and interfaces that must remain consistent across the work. I then directly implement critical paths or prototypes, especially where the design has the most risk, while delegating well-scoped ownership areas to teammates. Regular design reviews, code reviews, and written technical context keep execution aligned without making the team dependent on me for every decision.
I would treat AI-generated code as untrusted until it passes the same engineering standards as any other contribution. That includes peer review, automated tests, security scanning, dependency review, architectural checks, and careful handling of sensitive data and credentials. I would also define approved use cases, monitor defect patterns, and ensure engineers understand the system behavior rather than accepting generated output without validation.
I would combine timely, actionable code-review feedback with pairing on high-leverage problems and intentional delegation of meaningful ownership. I would make technical reasoning visible through design documents and postmortems, tailor coaching to each engineer's goals, and create safe opportunities for people to lead decisions. This improves delivery because the team gains context and confidence instead of relying on a single technical owner.
About this role.
About Us:
Fieldguide is establishing a new state of trust for global commerce and capital markets through automating and streamlining the work of assurance and audit practitioners specifically within cybersecurity, privacy, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance). Put simply, we build software for the people who enable trust between businesses.
We’re based in San Francisco, CA and backed by top investors including Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Bessemer Venture Partners, 8VC, Floodgate, Y Combinator, DNX Ventures, Global Founders Capital, Justin Kan, Elad Gil, and more.
We value diversity — in backgrounds and in experiences. We need people from all backgrounds and walks of life to help build the future of audit and advisory. Fieldguide’s team is inclusive, driven, humble and supportive. We are deliberate and self-reflective about the kind of team and culture that we are building, seeking teammates that are not only strong in their own aptitudes but care deeply about supporting each other’s growth.
As an early stage start-up employee, you’ll have the opportunity to build out the future of business trust. We make audit practitioners’ lives easier by eliminating up to 50% of their work and giving them better work-life balance. If you share our values and enthusiasm for building a great culture and product, you will find a home at Fieldguide.
About the Role
We’re hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Financial Audit team at Fieldguide. Financial Audit is one of our most important strategic bets right now, and this is a high-impact role on a team that’s building something new. We’re not bolting AI onto traditional workflows; we’re rethinking financial audit as agentic-first from the ground up. You’ll own major workstreams tied to our largest customer onboardings and most ambitious product bets, working alongside engineers, product managers, designers, and financial audit subject matter experts who are all deeply embedded in the problem.
This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll write code every day, and increasingly write code with AI. We’re an AI-native team using tools like Claude Code extensively, and we expect this person to push that boundary further.
What You’ll Do
Set technical direction for agentic financial audit experiences, making architectural decisions that balance autonomy, reliability, and auditability
Own the most complex, ambiguous engineering problems on the team and drive them to resolution without needing a well-defined path handed to you
Design and build agent-driven workflows from the ground up, defining where AI autonomy is appropriate and where human judgment needs to stay in the loop
Partner with product and design to shape what we build, not just how we build it, bringing technical perspective into roadmap and strategy conversations early
Mentor and grow the engineers around you through code review, pairing, and the way you approach and communicate hard problems
Contribute to our interview process and help us raise the bar as we scale the team
Who You Are
A seasoned full-stack engineer with a track record of driving large, complex projects from an ambiguous problem to production
Experienced in setting technical direction at the team or org level, not just delivering within it
Comfortable operating where the requirements are unclear and the right answer isn’t obvious
A strong technical collaborator who influences product and design decisions
Already using AI coding tools as a core part of how you work, and thoughtful about where agentic approaches create real leverage
Able to build deep domain knowledge fast; you don’t need to know financial auditing today, but you’ll understand it well enough to make the right technical calls within months
A multiplier on the engineers around you; your impact extends well beyond your own code
Bonus Points
Experience in financial services, audit, accounting, or compliance
Prior work building AI or agent-driven product experiences
Familiarity with our stack: TypeScript, React, GraphQL, Node.js, PostgreSQL
Background working at high-growth startups where you wore a lot of hats
Experience with document processing or infrastructure work
