Sample interview questions
I would define the data contract and grain first, then build idempotent ingestion and transformation stages with schema validation, lineage, partitioning, and retry handling. I would add freshness, volume, uniqueness, and referential-integrity checks, plus monitoring and alerting tied to documented service-level expectations.
I would start with stakeholder interviews and an audit of source systems, transformations, definitions, and known failure modes. I would document ownership and metrics, reconcile critical fields to sources, implement automated quality tests and observability, and publish a governed model with clear usage guidance.
I consider source volume, target-platform compute capabilities, transformation complexity, latency, governance requirements, and cost. ELT is often effective when a scalable warehouse can perform transformations centrally, while ETL can be preferable when data must be filtered, standardized, or protected before loading.
I explain the business impact first, such as which decision or metric could be affected, then describe the limitation in plain language and quantify uncertainty where possible. I present practical options, expected timelines, and a clear recommendation so stakeholders can make informed trade-offs.
I would identify priority user workflows, involve representative users early, and make the tool solve a measurable pain point. I would provide intuitive documentation, examples, migration support, and feedback channels, then track adoption and reliability metrics to iterate on the product.
