Sample interview questions
How would you translate the CSO's annual strategy into an operating plan for the Science organization?

I would begin by clarifying the few highest-value strategic outcomes, then define quarterly objectives, milestones, accountable owners, dependencies, and measurable indicators. I would establish a regular operating cadence to review progress, resolve decisions, and adapt plans as commercial, product, or delivery conditions change.

Describe how you would identify and address a capacity risk affecting scientific service delivery.

I would integrate demand pipeline, committed work, staffing levels, skills availability, utilization, timelines, and quality indicators into a capacity model. I would then present leadership with practical options, such as reprioritization, hiring, contractor support, process changes, or adjusted delivery commitments, along with their trade-offs.

How do you influence leaders across scientific, product, commercial, and finance teams when their priorities conflict?

I create a shared fact base, make the decision criteria explicit, and frame choices around organizational outcomes rather than functional preferences. I listen for underlying constraints, document agreements and owners, and escalate only the decisions that genuinely require executive resolution.

What makes an executive decision document effective?

An effective document states the decision required, provides concise context and evidence, outlines options and trade-offs, and recommends a clear path forward. It should anticipate likely questions while remaining brief enough for senior leaders to act on it quickly.

How would you preserve scientific rigor while improving operating processes?

I would first distinguish essential scientific controls from process friction that does not improve quality. I would involve scientific leaders in designing improvements, pilot changes with defined quality metrics, and scale only after demonstrating that rigor, compliance, and client outcomes are maintained or improved.
