Sample interview questions
I would begin by defining the target customer behaviour and its connection to durable customer and business outcomes. I would establish clear primary metrics, guardrails such as customer harm or financial-risk indicators, eligibility rules, power calculations, and a consistent decision framework. I would then prioritise experiments by expected impact, confidence, effort, and learning value, while ensuring results are documented and reusable across teams.
I would first understand the customer problem and the decision the team needs to make. I would test whether the metric is actionable, resistant to gaming, and causally connected to customer value rather than being a convenient proxy. I would propose a balanced metric set with a primary outcome, leading indicators, and guardrails, then align stakeholders on the trade-offs before launch.
I use standardised experiment design templates, pre-registered hypotheses where appropriate, automated quality checks, and clear ownership of metric definitions. I also check randomisation, sample-ratio mismatches, data completeness, novelty effects, and multiple-testing risk. Speed improves when these safeguards are built into reusable tooling instead of being recreated for each experiment.
I would help them frame analyses around the stakeholder’s decision, customer impact, and recommended action rather than around methodology alone. We would practise concise communication, anticipate objections, and structure readouts using context, evidence, trade-offs, and a clear ask. I would provide opportunities for them to lead discussions, followed by specific feedback and coaching.
I would clarify the decision deadline and identify which uncertainties materially change the recommendation. I would combine the available quantitative evidence with qualitative context, state assumptions explicitly, and use sensitivity analysis or targeted data collection to reduce the highest-value uncertainty. The final recommendation would distinguish established facts from hypotheses and specify how we will validate the decision after implementation.
