Sample interview questions
I would first confirm the scope and timing using monitoring data, then inspect processes, load averages, CPU wait states, memory pressure, disk I/O, and network behavior with tools such as top, vmstat, iostat, sar, and journalctl. I would correlate findings with recent deployments or traffic changes, mitigate customer impact, identify root cause, and document preventive actions.
I would inventory services, dependencies, data stores, network requirements, and rollback constraints; test the migration in a representative environment; and define validation, backup, cutover, and rollback procedures. During execution, I would monitor health checks and performance closely, communicate status to stakeholders, and update documentation after successful completion.
I apply timely patches, enforce least privilege, secure SSH, disable unnecessary services, configure host firewalls, use centralized logging and monitoring, and establish backup and recovery controls. I also validate file permissions, authentication policies, audit settings, and compliance with the organization’s baseline configuration.
I use Bash or Python to automate repeatable tasks such as health checks, log collection, account maintenance, configuration validation, backup verification, and deployment workflows. I build scripts with error handling, clear logging, idempotent behavior where possible, and documentation so they can be safely operated by the wider team.
I would define the affected clients and services, compare successful and failed paths, and inspect DNS, routing, firewall rules, load-balancer health, connection limits, and application logs. Packet captures and timestamp correlation can isolate where traffic fails, after which I would implement and validate the remediation while monitoring for recurrence.
