Sample interview questions
I would begin with discovery across workload characteristics, model size, GPU count, data movement, latency and throughput targets, security needs, timeline, and acceptance criteria. I would convert these findings into measurable technical requirements, identify gaps in current capabilities, and align engineering work by customer impact, reuse potential, risk, and delivery dependencies.
I would assess GPU type and topology, CPU and memory balance, local versus shared storage performance, network bandwidth and latency, RDMA support, fault tolerance, orchestration model, observability, capacity availability, and operational support. The design should be validated against the customer's distributed-training framework, dataset characteristics, scaling profile, and service-level expectations.
Kubernetes is commonly used for container orchestration and cloud-native platform workflows, while Slurm is widely used for scheduling batch-oriented high-performance computing and GPU clusters. I would focus on the customer's operational model, workload scheduling patterns, tenancy requirements, ecosystem integrations, and the level of managed abstraction they need before recommending product capabilities.
I would make the trade-offs explicit by assessing customer value, revenue or retention impact, engineering cost, delivery risk, and whether the capability can become a reusable product offering. I would present options to stakeholders, seek a minimum viable path where appropriate, and ensure that any customer-specific work has clear boundaries, success metrics, and a plan for broader productization.
For executives, I would explain the business impact, probability, decision required, mitigation options, and revised timeline in concise language. For engineering teams, I would provide the relevant technical constraints, dependencies, validation criteria, ownership, and escalation path so they can act on the issue effectively.
