Sample interview questions
I start by defining measurable SLOs, error budgets, and service ownership boundaries. I invest in observability, tested runbooks, capacity planning, resilient architecture, and blameless incident reviews that produce prioritized reliability work. I use error-budget signals to make explicit trade-offs between feature delivery and operational risk.
I would standardize cluster configuration through version-controlled Terraform modules, establish reusable platform APIs and golden paths, and implement policy checks in CI/CD. Progressive rollout, drift detection, clear ownership, and automated validation would reduce risk while allowing teams to provision consistently at scale.
I stay close enough to architecture, operational data, and key design reviews to make informed decisions, without becoming a bottleneck. I delegate ownership clearly, coach technical leads, and use regular one-on-ones, planning rituals, and outcome-based goals to develop people while maintaining delivery accountability.
I establish a clear incident commander, stabilize customer impact first, maintain a concise communications cadence, and ensure decisions are logged. After recovery, I lead a blameless review that identifies contributing system factors, assigns durable corrective actions, and verifies that improvements are completed rather than merely documented.
I would apply AI to accelerate tasks such as drafting runbooks, summarizing incidents, exploring logs, generating test cases, and prototyping automation, while retaining human review for security-sensitive and production-impacting changes. I would measure practical outcomes, document lessons from failures, and establish guardrails for data handling and code quality.
