Sample interview questions
I would first align the reporting period, currency treatment, account identifiers, and metric definitions used in each system. I would then create a record-level reconciliation that categorizes differences such as timing delays, duplicate accounts, refunds, credit notes, subscription amendments, and missing integrations. After identifying the root cause, I would document the resolution, correct the appropriate source or transformation logic, and implement monitoring to prevent recurrence.
I start with a stable customer and subscription grain, then compare recurring revenue snapshots across periods. New MRR comes from customers with no prior recurring revenue, expansion and downgrade MRR capture positive or negative changes for retained customers, and churned MRR is recurring revenue lost when a customer reaches zero. I validate that the components reconcile to total period-over-period MRR movement.
I would build a monthly subscription snapshot using a calendar spine, normalized subscription records, and effective start and end dates. Window functions such as LAG help compare each customer’s current recurring revenue with the prior month, while CTEs isolate account mapping, currency normalization, and movement classifications. I would add data-quality checks for duplicate subscriptions, null customer mappings, and unexpected negative values.
An effective executive dashboard presents a small set of trusted KPIs, clear period comparisons, and visible drivers of movement rather than only raw totals. I would include ARR, MRR, retention, churn, expansion, and forecast views, with drill-down capability for customer segments or products. Definitions, refresh timing, and data ownership should be documented so stakeholders interpret metrics consistently.
I would communicate the business impact first, including which metric is affected, the estimated magnitude, and whether the issue changes a decision or external report. I would then provide a concise explanation of the likely cause, the current workaround or corrected figure, and a clear timeline for final resolution. This keeps stakeholders informed without overwhelming them with technical implementation details.
