Sample interview questions
I would begin by mapping applications, traffic flows, identities, and trust boundaries. I would then define least-privilege zones and enforce Layer 3/4 and Layer 7 policies using VRFs, firewalls, identity-based controls, and continuous logging. I would roll out controls incrementally, validate application behavior, and use monitoring data to refine policies.
I would configure secure connectivity and authentication between the firewall platform and the identity provider, synchronize users and groups, and map identity attributes to policy rules. I would test authentication, group-to-policy mappings, certificate handling, logging, and failure scenarios before deployment, while ensuring access follows least-privilege principles.
I assess advisories and asset exposure, prioritize vulnerabilities by exploitability and business impact, and test upgrades in a representative environment where possible. For production changes, I create a maintenance plan, configuration backup, validation checklist, rollback procedure, and stakeholder communication. Afterward, I verify service health, policy behavior, telemetry, and software versions.
I would first establish the affected scope and compare healthy versus unhealthy paths. I would inspect interface health, routing and BGP adjacencies, EVPN route advertisements, VRF configuration, MTU consistency, MAC or ARP learning, firewall policies, and relevant logs or telemetry. I would correlate the timing of symptoms with changes and isolate the issue through targeted packet captures and controlled tests.
I use version-controlled infrastructure definitions, peer review, reusable templates, pre-deployment validation, and staged rollout procedures. Automation can standardize firewall objects, policies, device baselines, compliance checks, and evidence collection. I also include idempotency, audit logging, secrets management, and clear rollback paths to make changes safe and traceable.
