Sample interview questions
I would start by assessing service health, developer pain points, architectural risks, business priorities, and team capacity. I would translate these inputs into measurable outcomes, sequence foundational work alongside near-term delivery needs, and review the roadmap regularly with engineering and product partners.
I prioritize recurring one-on-ones, actionable feedback, career planning, and clear team context while staying engaged in architecture discussions and design reviews. I do not need to make every implementation decision, but I ensure I understand the important trade-offs and help the team make durable choices.
I would use reliability indicators such as availability, latency, error rates, incident volume, and mean time to recovery, alongside delivery and developer-experience signals such as deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, and internal user feedback. The metrics should guide learning and investment rather than become targets in isolation.
I would define the underlying problem, required capabilities, security and reliability constraints, total cost of ownership, integration complexity, and strategic differentiation. I would involve the engineers who will operate the solution, compare realistic alternatives, and document the decision and revisit criteria.
I frame the decision in terms of customer impact, risk, delivery timing, cost, and the options available. I avoid unnecessary implementation detail, clearly state the recommendation and its trade-offs, and create space for stakeholders to ask questions before committing.
