Sample interview questions
I would first segment discrepancies by source system, partner, revenue stream, transaction type, and timing to identify patterns. I would reconcile source data, CPQ or billing-platform records, ERP postings, and contract terms, then document root causes and control gaps. Finally, I would prioritize remediation, establish ownership and SLAs, and create monitoring to prevent recurrence.
I would define the business problem, measurable success criteria, affected workflows, data requirements, controls, and exception scenarios with stakeholders. I would translate these into documented requirements, partner with Product and Engineering on solution design, and coordinate UAT using representative scenarios. After launch, I would monitor accuracy, adoption, manual-effort reduction, and unresolved defects against the original success criteria.
Key controls include approval workflows, role-based access, segregation of duties, controlled master-data changes, documented support for credits and adjustments, reconciliation of billing to source transactions and the general ledger, and evidence of review. I would also ensure exceptions are tracked, timely resolved, and periodically analyzed for systemic issues.
I use SQL to extract and join transaction, customer, contract, invoice, and payment data for reconciliations and exception analysis. In Excel, I use pivot tables, lookups, validation checks, and repeatable templates to investigate variances and prepare close support. The goal is to turn recurring manual analysis into dependable reporting and automated controls.
I would protect the close process through clear operating calendars, documented ownership, escalation paths, and daily visibility into high-risk items. In parallel, I would maintain a prioritized automation backlog based on control risk, time savings, customer impact, and implementation effort. Recurring close pain points would be strong candidates for targeted automation once the immediate close is stabilized.
