Sample interview questions
How would you design a scalable Rails-based workflow for ingesting and querying high-volume security events?

I would separate ingestion, normalization, enrichment, storage, and query responsibilities, using asynchronous processing and idempotent event handling. I would select storage and indexing strategies based on event cardinality and query patterns, establish retention policies, and instrument throughput, latency, failures, and cost. I would validate the design with representative load tests before broad rollout.

Describe a technical decision you made that affected multiple engineering teams.

I begin by clarifying business outcomes, constraints, affected systems, and measurable success criteria. I document alternatives and trade-offs, involve relevant technical and product stakeholders early, and make a clear recommendation. After implementation, I track the agreed metrics and adjust the approach based on evidence.

How do you maintain quality and uptime for a mission-critical feature?

I establish explicit reliability objectives, layered automated tests, code and design reviews, secure deployment practices, and actionable monitoring. I also ensure rollback plans, incident ownership, runbooks, and post-incident learning are part of delivery rather than afterthoughts. This creates shared accountability for both feature velocity and operational health.

How would you improve a mature Ruby on Rails monolith without unnecessarily disrupting delivery?

I would first map critical domains, dependencies, performance bottlenecks, and operational risks. Then I would prioritize incremental improvements such as clearer boundaries, targeted extraction of high-load workflows, stronger test coverage, query optimization, and better observability. Each change would be reversible, measured, and tied to a concrete product or reliability need.

What is your approach to adopting AI coding agents within an engineering organization?

I treat AI tools as accelerators that require clear guardrails, not replacements for engineering judgment. I would define approved use cases, protect sensitive code and data, require human review and testing, and measure effects on cycle time, defects, and developer experience. I would share successful patterns across teams while continuously refining policies based on outcomes.

What We Do:

Cybercrime is growing, and more businesses are getting hit by threats that used to target only the biggest organizations. That pushes defenders like us to operate at the highest level, and it deepens our need for good people who want to make a meaningful impact.

Founded in 2015 by former NSA cyber operators, Huntress is a remote-first team working to make enterprise-grade cybersecurity accessible to businesses of all sizes. We work closely with security teams and service providers protecting complex environments, often without the time or headcount to handle it all. That’s why we build our technology in-house and back it with a 24/7 human-led Security Operations Center (SOC). As a result, our platform is never disconnected from the experts who manage it, ensuring our customers’ protection.

Huntress now secures more than 6M endpoints and 16M identities worldwide. Those numbers keep growing because more businesses rely on us to help carry the load and operate with more confidence.
