Sample interview questions
I would describe the cluster topology, replication or erasure-coding choices, failure-domain design, monitoring strategy, upgrade approach, and the reliability and performance outcomes achieved. I would also explain how I used capacity forecasting and incident learnings to improve operational resilience.
I would define explicit service-level objectives for each tier and select hardware, data-protection policies, replication, caching, and placement rules accordingly. I would continuously validate the trade-offs with workload telemetry, cost-per-GB metrics, and customer-facing performance measurements.
These workloads require sustained throughput, predictable low latency, high metadata performance, and efficient parallel access patterns. I would benchmark representative workloads, reduce bottlenecks across the network and storage stack, and use tiering or caching strategies that match data-access behavior.
I would establish measurable SLOs, redundancy across appropriate fault domains, tested disaster-recovery procedures, comprehensive observability, and a disciplined incident-management process. Post-incident reviews would produce prioritized reliability improvements, with regular game days to validate readiness.
I set clear ownership boundaries, operating metrics, escalation paths, and documentation standards while giving team members meaningful technical autonomy. Regular one-on-ones, coaching, design reviews, and transparent planning help align the team and support individual growth.
