The role, at a glance.
Monzo is hiring a Senior Product Data Scientist to improve product engagement and support data-informed decision-making across banking product squads. The role combines quantitative analysis, large-scale experimentation, user-behaviour analysis, and commercial measurement such as customer lifetime value and profitability. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, product managers, designers, marketers, and finance partners while helping teams measure meaningful outcomes. Strong SQL, preferably Python, experimental design, strategic thinking, and proactive stakeholder partnership are central to the position.

Sample interview questions
I would define the target user population, a clear treatment and control assignment, the primary engagement metric, guardrail metrics, and the minimum detectable effect before launch. I would calculate sample-size and duration requirements, validate instrumentation, monitor experiment health, and interpret results with both statistical and product context.
I would first define lifetime value consistently with finance, including revenue, costs, risk, and an appropriate observation window. I would compare eligible treated and control cohorts using experimental evidence where possible, adjust for exposure timing and confounders, and report incremental value alongside uncertainty and segment-level effects.
I would translate the decision into a measurement specification, identify the required events and properties, and agree ownership and acceptance criteria with engineering. After implementation, I would validate event completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and consistency against expected user flows before using the data for decisions.
I would distinguish statistical significance from business significance and quantify the expected customer and financial impact at scale. If the benefit does not justify implementation cost, risk, or opportunity cost, I would recommend not prioritising it or using the result to identify a more promising iteration.
I begin with the business question, decision required, and the headline conclusion, then explain the evidence, assumptions, limitations, and recommended action in plain language. I use concise visualisations and offer technical detail in an appendix so stakeholders can act confidently without losing analytical rigor.
