The role, at a glance.
ClickUp seeks a senior hands-on engineering manager to lead Cloud Platform and infrastructure initiatives supporting a multi-region AI workspace. The role owns infrastructure strategy, roadmap delivery, reliability, cost efficiency, security controls, and cross-functional alignment with Product, AI, Enterprise, Security, SRE, and database teams. Key technical work includes AWS EKS migrations, ingress/ALB consolidation, Terraform standardization, Backstage automation, and incident/RCA leadership. The manager will lead a distributed senior engineering team, develop bench depth, hire for specialist gaps, and manage contractor performance and cloud-spend savings. Success requires deep AWS platform expertise alongside strong people leadership, technical judgment, and AI-enabled automation practices.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with workload discovery, dependency mapping, service-level objectives, and a risk-ranked migration plan. I would establish reusable EKS platform patterns, automate infrastructure through Terraform, and migrate incrementally using measurable performance, availability, and cost gates. Each phase would include rollback procedures, observability, security validation, and a post-migration review.
I would analyze incident history to identify recurring failure modes, then codify hardened ingress and DNS patterns as versioned Terraform modules with policy guardrails. I would add automated pre-deployment validation, clear ownership and on-call runbooks, and monitoring tied to user-facing service objectives. After incidents, I would ensure RCA actions have owners, due dates, and verification that the corrective controls work.
I treat cost as an engineering metric rather than a one-time Finance exercise. I would establish visibility by workload and team, prioritize high-confidence optimization opportunities, and measure savings against reliability and deployment-flow metrics. Decisions such as self-hosting or workload migration would require a total-cost and operational-risk assessment, with clear success criteria and accountability.
I would map critical systems to primary and secondary owners, identify skill gaps, and create an intentional rotation of design reviews, pairing, documentation, and incident participation. I would use development plans and targeted hiring to fill durable gaps while ensuring knowledge is captured in reusable modules, runbooks, and architecture records. Progress would be visible through coverage metrics and reduced single-owner dependencies.
I would start with bounded, auditable use cases such as IaC reviews, incident triage, documentation maintenance, and safe remediation recommendations. Each tool would have clear access controls, human approval points for production changes, measurable outcomes, and security review. Once value and reliability are demonstrated, I would scale adoption through shared workflows, training, and governance.
About this role.
At ClickUp, we’re building the future of work: the first truly converged AI workspace unifying tasks, docs, chat, calendar, and enterprise search, all supercharged by context-driven AI. We are an AI-native company. Every team member is expected to leverage AI daily, and we evaluate AI fluency as part of our hiring process. Join us and help redefine what’s possible. 🚀
This role bridges infrastructure and product engineering: you’ll build genuine partnerships across product, AI, and enterprise teams so that ownership is shared and velocity is never blocked by platform constraints. As a leader, you’ll set a forward-looking cloud vision, proactively align with stakeholders across the business, and ensure the platform scales for multi-shard, multi-region growth while meeting security and compliance commitments (SOC 2, business continuity/disaster recovery, and enterprise security frameworks). You’ll implement and drive the adoption of AI-powered tooling and autonomous agents within the infrastructure organization.
The Role:
Cost Efficiency: Deliver measurable annual infrastructure savings by executing the migration of data workloads to EKS and self-hosting key services.
Ingress Convergence: Deprecate legacy frontend ALBs and consolidate to a single EKS-managed ALB per shard, unblocking faster deployments across the org.
Coverage & Bench Depth: Eliminate single points of ownership across Networking, OpenSearch, and Terraform through cross-training and targeted hiring.
Stakeholder Alignment: Stand up a recurring alignment cadence with Product, AI, Enterprise, and Security so infra planning is driven by demand, not ad-hoc interrupts.
Automation: Ship automated shard buildout via Backstage to remove manual toil from enterprise scaling.
Reliability: Cut P0/P1 incidents attributed to Cloud Platform (DNS, ALB misconfiguration, EKS) through hardened ingress patterns and Terraform-policy guardrails. Own incident response and RCA follow-through for the team.
Roadmap Ownership: Own and deliver against the team’s roadmap for Agent enablement, centralized IaC, and deployment rollout acceleration, and contribute to the broader Cloud Platform strategy tied to AI and Enterprise revenue goals.
Technical Leadership: Architect and contribute code to key initiatives (EKS migration, ALB consolidation, Backstage shard automation), and lead design reviews with senior engineers.
People Leadership: Lead, grow, and retain a senior-heavy team distributed across the US, Canada, and Europe, spanning FTEs and contractors, with a focus on career development, cross-training, and bench depth.
Vendor Management: Partner with Finance and leadership on AWS spend visibility and savings targets, manage contractor performance and budget, and keep a savings-pipeline mindset baked into planning.
Qualifications:
Experience: 9+ years in infrastructure/platform engineering, including 5+ years in engineering management leading distributed teams of senior engineers while remaining hands-on.
Deep AWS infrastructure mastery: EKS, networking (VPC/TGW/DNS), and Terraform at scale, with strong architectural judgment; able to review designs and guide senior engineers’ technical decisions.
Hands-on technical leadership: Actively architects, writes code, and develops systems alongside the team. You are a working engineer as well as a manager.
Strategic roadmap ownership: Experience translating cloud priorities into 3–9 month team roadmaps tied to business outcomes across enterprise, AI, and cost, and delivering against them.
Cross-team influence: Builds genuine partnerships across Product, Security, SRE, and DB orgs, driving shared ownership across traditional infra/product boundaries.
Application-level curiosity: Genuinely understands what the product does, not just the infrastructure underneath, and extends ownership past traditional platform boundaries.
People leadership: Proven experience managing, growing, and retaining senior, geographically distributed teams across FTE/contractor blends; builds bench depth and contributes to succession planning.
Hiring: Experience running structured hiring loops and closing senior engineers, including into specialized gaps (networking, search, IaC).
Operational rigor: Strong on-call instincts, incident ownership, and RCA follow-through.
Security-first instincts: This team touches blast radius (auth enforcement, network isolation, shard boundaries). A verify-first, never-assume mindset is non-negotiable.
AI & automation mindset: Uses AI tools daily in your own engineering work, with demonstrated appetite for DevSecOps agents, AI-assisted IaC migrations, and skills-based automation — a core part of the near-term roadmap.
AI/ML infrastructure experience (strong plus): Scaling workloads like GPU orchestration, model-serving infrastructure, or cost-optimized compute for inference.
Education: BS/MS in CS, Engineering, or equivalent.
