Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a performance bottleneck in a PostgreSQL driver used by a Data API?

I would first establish reproducible workloads and collect latency, throughput, CPU, memory, connection, and database-query metrics. I would profile the driver and application layers, inspect PostgreSQL execution plans and wait events, then isolate the bottleneck with targeted benchmarks before implementing and validating a measured improvement.

Describe your approach to safely delivering a new PostgREST feature in an open-source project.

I would clarify the expected API behavior and compatibility constraints, review relevant architecture and existing issues, and propose a focused design for feedback. I would implement the feature with unit, integration, and regression tests, document user-facing behavior, and use code review plus staged validation to reduce release risk.

How do you handle an escalated production support issue involving an API integration?

I begin by assessing impact, gathering request traces, logs, environment details, and a minimal reproduction. I communicate status clearly, mitigate customer impact where possible, identify the root cause across the API, database, and client boundaries, and create follow-up work for monitoring, tests, and prevention.

What practices would you use to maintain reliable SQL and PL/pgSQL code in a multitenant system?

I would enforce tenant isolation through carefully designed schemas, roles, policies, and parameterized queries, while avoiding unsafe dynamic SQL. I would test authorization boundaries and migration paths, monitor slow queries, and ensure functions have explicit error handling, predictable transaction behavior, and documented performance characteristics.

How do you work effectively in a fast-paced asynchronous engineering organization?

I write concise design notes, status updates, and decision records so teammates can make progress across time zones. I break work into visible milestones, raise risks early, prioritize customer-impacting incidents, and maintain strong ownership while seeking review for decisions with broad technical consequences.
