Sample interview questions
I begin by reviewing the policy language, endorsements, limits, retentions, exclusions, and applicable notice requirements. I then map the reported facts and loss components to each coverage grant, identify potential coverage issues, and coordinate with relevant carriers or excess stakeholders to establish a consistent position and escalation plan.
I assess the known facts, legal and coverage exposure, likely defense and incident-response costs, severity scenarios, available limits, and input from counsel or technical vendors. I document the rationale clearly, set an appropriate reserve promptly, and revise it as material facts, estimates, or settlement prospects change.
I would establish early communication with the insured, broker, incident-response providers, and internal stakeholders, clarify roles and reporting expectations, and ensure approved vendors are engaged quickly. I would monitor costs, key decisions, coverage considerations, and recovery opportunities while providing timely, clear updates throughout the incident.
I prepare by validating the facts, reviewing coverage and damages support, understanding each party's objectives, and identifying realistic resolution ranges. During discussions, I communicate the rationale transparently, remain commercially pragmatic, and seek a timely outcome that is consistent with policy obligations and sound claims practices.
Claims data can reveal recurring causes of loss, industry-specific patterns, control failures, vendor-cost trends, and severity drivers. I would provide structured feedback to underwriting so those insights can inform risk selection, pricing, coverage terms, and proactive risk-management recommendations.
