Sample interview questions
I would first assess version compatibility for the control plane, node pools, add-ons, ingress controllers, and workloads. I would validate the process in a representative non-production environment, define rollback and monitoring plans, then upgrade incrementally using maintenance windows and phased node rotation. During and after the change, I would monitor workload health, latency, error rates, and cluster events, and document lessons learned.
I use Git repositories as the desired-state source, with environment-specific configuration managed through structured overlays or Helm values. ApplicationSets can generate consistent applications across clusters and environments, while sync policies, projects, RBAC, and promotion controls enforce deployment standards. I also configure drift detection and alerts so teams can quickly identify and remediate unauthorized changes.
I create modules with clear interfaces, validated inputs, sensible defaults, versioning, and focused responsibilities. I keep remote state protected and isolated by environment, use locking where supported, and expose only necessary outputs. I also include documentation, automated formatting and validation, plan reviews, and drift detection in CI to make changes safe and understandable.
I would first establish scope and customer impact using dashboards, alerts, logs, traces, and recent deployment history. I would mitigate the immediate issue through a safe rollback, scaling action, traffic adjustment, or other documented runbook step while keeping stakeholders informed. After restoration, I would lead a blameless post-mortem that identifies technical and process causes, assigns follow-up actions, and improves monitoring or automation to reduce recurrence.
I would apply least-privilege RBAC, namespace isolation, network policies, secure secret management, and workload identity rather than long-lived credentials. I would standardize policy checks in CI and admission controls, keep cluster and dependency patching current, and centralize audit logging and security monitoring. The platform should provide secure defaults that application teams can adopt without unnecessary friction.
