Sample interview questions
How have you advised leaders through a complex employee relations matter while maintaining consistency and confidentiality?

I first gather relevant facts, documentation, policy requirements, and stakeholder perspectives. I assess risk, outline practical options for the leader, and recommend an approach that is fair, well documented, and aligned with company policy and applicable law. I communicate only on a need-to-know basis and follow up to ensure the resolution is implemented appropriately.

Describe your experience administering leaves of absence and workplace accommodations across multiple jurisdictions.

I manage the process from eligibility review through documentation, communication, leave tracking, return-to-work planning, and coordination with payroll and benefits partners. I maintain clear records and timelines, apply legal and policy requirements consistently, and provide managers with actionable guidance while protecting employee privacy. For multi-jurisdiction work, I verify state, provincial, and federal requirements before finalizing recommendations.

How would you use workforce data to identify and address a retention risk?

I would review turnover by team, tenure, manager, location, role, and exit-feedback themes, then compare the findings with engagement and performance data. I would validate patterns with leader and employee input, identify likely drivers, and recommend focused actions such as manager coaching, career development improvements, workload changes, or compensation review. I would establish success metrics and monitor results over time.

What is your approach to improving manager capability in performance management?

I make expectations concrete by providing managers with simple tools, clear timelines, calibration guidance, and coaching on difficult conversations. Training should include practical scenarios on goal setting, feedback, documentation, and addressing underperformance consistently. I also monitor completion and quality trends, then provide targeted follow-up support where managers need it most.

How do you balance urgent employee needs with longer-term HR initiatives?

I use a structured prioritization process based on employee impact, legal or business risk, deadlines, and strategic value. I reserve time for critical operational work while creating project plans with milestones, stakeholders, and regular updates for longer-term initiatives. When priorities conflict, I communicate trade-offs early and partner with leadership to reset scope or timelines as needed.
