The role, at a glance.
Mozilla is seeking a contract Staff Software Engineer to reduce Firefox's WebCompat backlog and improve compatibility with real-world websites. The role focuses on reproducing, diagnosing, and triaging site-breakage reports, then creating compatibility interventions or small code fixes. Strong practical web debugging skills across HTML, CSS, JavaScript, browser developer tools, and cross-browser behavior are central to success. The engineer will use AI-assisted tooling to accelerate investigation and implementation while ensuring fixes are correctly validated and landed. Gecko or web-standards experience is advantageous but can be learned on the job.

Sample interview questions
I would first reproduce the issue in a clean Firefox profile and capture exact steps, expected behavior, and observed behavior. I would compare network activity, console errors, DOM output, CSS layout, and relevant API behavior across browsers, then reduce the issue to a minimal test case and determine whether an intervention, site-facing diagnosis, or browser fix is appropriate.
An actionable diagnosis includes reliable reproduction steps, affected Firefox and site versions, expected versus actual results, relevant console or network evidence, and a concise explanation of the likely root cause. It should also identify the appropriate owner or propose a minimal next action, such as a compatibility intervention or a product bug.
I would use AI to speed up hypothesis generation, summarize logs, suggest test cases, and draft small patches or tests. I would independently validate all outputs through browser testing, code review standards, and minimal reproducible examples rather than treating generated suggestions as authoritative.
I would verify that the original regression is fixed in affected Firefox versions or builds, test representative unaffected scenarios, and compare behavior with other browsers where useful. I would add or update automated coverage when feasible, check for unintended scope from the intervention, and document the evidence in the bug report.
I would prioritize reports by user impact, reproducibility, severity, regression risk, and whether a small intervention can resolve a broadly used site. I would quickly close duplicates or non-actionable reports, group similar failures, and maintain clear status updates so the backlog becomes measurable and easier to process.
About this role.
You will help reduce Firefox’s WebCompat bug backlog by finishing or verifying the diagnosis of the long tail of site-breakage bugs, and by writing interventions or simple fixes (often with AI assistance). You turn a large queue of reported breakages into diagnosed, actionable, or fixed bugs.
Responsibilities
- Finish diagnosing, or verify the diagnosis of, long-tail WebCompat bugs.
- Write WebCompat interventions where appropriate.
- Write simple fixes (AI-assisted) and land them.
- Reproduce and triage incoming site-breakage reports.
Required qualifications
- Solid web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and comfort debugging real-world site breakage.
- Fluent with browser devtools and cross-browser diagnosis.
- Comfortable using AI tooling to speed up diagnosis and fixes.
Preferred
- Gecko knowledge is a strong plus (but can be taught).
- Prior WebCompat or web-standards experience.
