Sample interview questions
How would you balance hands-on technical contribution with the people-management responsibilities of this role?

I would reserve regular time for architectural reviews, technical risk assessment, and selective contributions where my involvement unblocks the team. My primary responsibility would remain creating clarity, developing engineers, and ensuring sustainable delivery rather than becoming a bottleneck for implementation.

Describe how you would approach building reliable device recovery mechanisms for an immutable embedded Linux platform.

I would begin by defining failure modes, recovery objectives, and security boundaries with product and hardware stakeholders. I would design for atomic updates, verified boot, rollback capability, telemetry, and testable recovery workflows, then validate behavior across representative hardware architectures and field conditions.

How do you lead a distributed team across multiple time zones?

I establish clear written goals, decision records, ownership boundaries, and predictable communication rhythms. I use asynchronous documentation for most decisions, protect focus time, rotate meeting times fairly when needed, and use one-to-ones to maintain trust, coaching, and early visibility into delivery risks.

What factors would you consider when prioritizing work across ARM, RISC-V, and x86 Ubuntu Core deployments?

I would assess customer impact, strategic platform commitments, security and reliability risk, hardware maturity, engineering effort, and dependencies. I would make trade-offs visible through a roadmap, define common abstractions where possible, and avoid fragmenting the team by prioritizing reusable platform capabilities.

How would you improve engineering quality and delivery predictability in an agile embedded software team?

I would strengthen planning around measurable outcomes, technical discovery, dependency management, and explicit risk tracking. Quality would be supported through automated testing, hardware-in-the-loop validation where appropriate, code review standards, release criteria, incident learning, and regular retrospectives that produce actionable improvements.
