Sample interview questions
How would you manage a service user who discloses active suicidal thoughts during a helpline call?

I would remain calm, establish immediate safety, and complete a structured risk assessment covering intent, plan, means, timeframe, protective factors, and available support. I would follow the relevant safeguarding and escalation protocol, involve emergency or local crisis services when indicated, create a clear safety plan where appropriate, and document all actions promptly and accurately.

How do you decide whether a client needs brief therapy, referral to an affiliate clinician, or signposting to another service?

I use a concise clinical assessment to understand the presenting issue, severity, risk, goals, functional impact, available session entitlement, and suitability for short-term intervention. I match the client to the least restrictive clinically appropriate option, explain the rationale clearly, and ensure referrals or signposting include practical next steps.

Describe how you maintain therapeutic rapport while working through telephone or live-chat channels.

I use clear, empathic language, active listening, regular summaries, and focused open questions to help the client feel heard. In chat, I acknowledge key emotions and check understanding explicitly; on the phone, I also use tone, pacing, and appropriate pauses to create psychological safety while keeping the session goal-focused.

How would you manage competing priorities during a high-volume shift?

I would triage work according to immediate clinical risk and service-level requirements, addressing urgent safeguarding concerns first. I would use structured notes and task tracking to maintain continuity, communicate early with colleagues when capacity or escalation support is needed, and complete documentation as close to the interaction as possible.

What does good clinical documentation look like in a case-management setting?

Good documentation is timely, factual, concise, and clinically relevant. I record the presenting concerns, assessment findings, risk formulation, interventions, decisions, referrals, agreed actions, and any escalation undertaken, while avoiding assumptions and maintaining confidentiality in line with policy and professional standards.
