The role, at a glance.
ElevenLabs is hiring an experienced Data Engineer to build and scale reliable data pipelines across the organization. The role owns data delivery from ingestion through consumption, establishes dbt standards, and implements data-quality controls. The engineer will create self-service tooling, documentation, and AI agents that help cross-functional teams answer data questions independently. Success requires strong Python, SQL, dbt, cloud, infrastructure-as-code, and stakeholder-management capabilities in a fast-moving AI company.

Sample interview questions
I begin by defining source contracts, data ownership, freshness requirements, and downstream use cases. I build observable ingestion and transformation layers, use version-controlled dbt models with tests, and add monitoring for failures, volume anomalies, and SLA breaches. I then document the models and iterate with consumers as usage grows.
I would introduce a clear layered model structure, consistent naming conventions, source freshness checks, schema and custom tests, reusable macros, and mandatory documentation. Pull-request review, CI runs for changed models, and an ownership model for critical datasets help keep standards reliable as contributors increase.
I would first identify critical metrics and define their business meaning with stakeholders. Then I would implement source validation, dbt tests for uniqueness, completeness and referential integrity, reconciliation checks, and alerts for unexpected changes. Clear lineage and incident processes ensure issues are diagnosed and communicated quickly.
I clarify the decision the stakeholder is trying to make, the definitions behind requested metrics, expected update frequency, and who else may need the same information. Rather than delivering a one-off extract, I look for reusable models, semantic definitions, or governed self-service datasets that solve the broader problem.
AI agents can make governed data easier to discover by translating well-scoped questions into approved queries, explaining metric definitions, and directing users to trusted dashboards. I would constrain them to documented datasets, apply access controls, log usage, and validate outputs so they improve self-service without bypassing data governance.
