Sample interview questions
How would you build a predictable renewal forecast for a growing SaaS portfolio?

I would establish standardized renewal stages, required CRM fields, risk criteria, and inspection cadences. I would combine account-level customer health, stakeholder engagement, commercial status, procurement timelines, and historical conversion data to produce a forecast with clear confidence categories and documented mitigation plans.

How do you coach a Renewal Manager through a difficult pricing or contract negotiation?

I first clarify the customer’s business goals, decision process, objections, renewal value, and alternatives. Then I help the manager develop a negotiation plan with approved commercial guardrails, stakeholder mapping, value-based messaging, and escalation points while preserving the long-term relationship.

Which metrics would you use to evaluate a Renewals team?

I would track gross revenue retention, logo retention, renewal rate, churn and contraction, forecast accuracy, on-time renewal completion, renewal cycle time, multi-year adoption, productivity, and portfolio risk. I would review these measures by segment and renewal stage to identify process or coaching opportunities.

How would you define ownership between Customer Success, Sales, and Renewals?

Customer Success should own value realization, adoption, relationships, and early risk signals, while Renewals owns the commercial renewal process and timeline. Sales or Account Management should coordinate expansion opportunities, with documented handoffs and shared account plans to prevent duplicated or conflicting customer communication.

Describe how you would scale renewals operations without reducing customer experience.

I would segment the portfolio by complexity, value, and risk, then design high-touch, mid-touch, and digital renewal motions. Consistent playbooks, automated reminders, CRM workflows, dashboards, and escalation rules would allow the team to focus its time on the highest-risk and highest-value commercial conversations.
