Sample interview questions
I would begin by clarifying ingestion volume, query patterns, freshness requirements, tenancy boundaries, and reliability targets. I would use an event-driven ingestion pipeline, durable storage with partitioning and indexing designed for the access patterns, and separate write, transformation, and serving concerns. I would also define SLAs, observability, backfill processes, and a phased scaling plan validated with load testing.
I stay close to architecture, critical operational risks, and ambiguous technical decisions, while making ownership explicit for engineers and tech leads. I use design reviews and one-on-ones to provide context and challenge assumptions rather than taking over implementation. This keeps quality high while helping team members grow their decision-making capability.
I would establish shared outcomes, named owners, interface contracts, and a visible delivery plan with milestones and risk tracking. Regular cross-functional reviews would surface integration issues early, while written decision records would prevent ambiguity. If priorities conflict, I would use customer impact, launch risk, and agreed business objectives to drive escalation and trade-off decisions.
I would track catalog ingestion success rate, processing latency, data freshness, API availability and latency, error rates, and SLA attainment. For customer outcomes, I would measure onboarding completion, time to first usable catalog, catalog quality, and support volume. I would pair those metrics with operational alerts and clear ownership for remediation.
I frame the decision around customer impact, business goals, risks, cost, and delivery timing before describing technical detail. I present a small set of viable options with a recommendation and explicitly state what we gain or defer with each choice. I then document the decision and follow up with progress updates in language appropriate to the audience.
