The role, at a glance.
Databricks is hiring a senior Solutions Architect to own technical strategy and platform adoption for digital-native fintech customers. The role combines customer-facing technical pre-sales with hands-on architecture design across data engineering, real-time analytics, ML/AI, and cloud data platforms. The architect will lead discovery, design reviews, demos, production deployments, and competitive technical evaluations while coordinating internal specialists and partners. Strong Python and SQL coding skills are required, including live coding and debugging, along with experience in distributed systems and public-cloud deployments. Success depends on translating complex technical designs into clear business value for senior customer stakeholders.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by defining latency, throughput, accuracy, retention, and regulatory requirements. I would ingest events through a streaming source, use structured streaming with durable checkpointing, apply feature engineering and model scoring, and write curated outputs to governed Delta tables. I would include monitoring, model-performance checks, access controls, and a recovery strategy, then validate the design against expected transaction volumes and failure scenarios.
I would frame the discussion around agreed business outcomes and document the technical trade-offs, including cost, security, delivery speed, scalability, and operational risk. I would use a simple reference architecture and decision matrix to make alternatives clear, invite concerns from each stakeholder group, and record the final decision with ownership and next steps. This approach keeps the conversation constructive while creating alignment.
I would first discover the customer's priority use cases and measurable success criteria rather than lead with generic platform claims. I would build a focused proof of value that demonstrates an end-to-end workflow, such as ingestion, transformation, governance, model development, and serving, using representative customer data where possible. I would quantify performance, operational simplicity, governance capabilities, and time-to-value against the agreed criteria.
I would apply least-privilege access controls, centralized identity integration, data classification, encryption, audit logging, lineage, and environment separation. I would use governed data catalogs and fine-grained permissions for sensitive data, establish CI/CD controls for code and infrastructure, and define policies for model access, monitoring, and retention. I would partner with security and compliance teams early to ensure the architecture meets applicable requirements.
I would first isolate whether the bottleneck is data skew, inefficient joins, excessive shuffles, poor partitioning, source throughput, cluster sizing, or inefficient Python code. I would inspect query plans and execution metrics, reproduce the issue with a minimal workload, and make targeted changes such as filtering earlier, optimizing joins, repartitioning appropriately, or replacing row-wise logic with native distributed operations. I would explain each change and verify the improvement with before-and-after metrics.

What We Look For
- 6+ years in solutions architecture, data engineering, technical pre-sales, or a senior hands-on technical role
- Strong coding proficiency in Python and SQL — you must demonstrate live coding, debugging, and solution-building skills
- Deep expertise in distributed data systems architecture: designing scalable pipelines, streaming architectures, lakehouse patterns, and cloud-native data platforms
- Proficient on the Databricks Platform (or demonstrated ability to achieve proficiency rapidly) with a developing technical specialization in one area (e.g., real-time/streaming, ML/AI, data governance, migrations)
- Proven ability to lead architecture discussions with senior technical stakeholders — whiteboarding, design reviews, and trade-off analysis
- Experience with production deployments on public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including infrastructure, security, and governance considerations
- Track record of driving platform adoption and consumption growth within accounts
- Excellent communication skills — able to translate complex architectures into business value for both technical and executive audiences
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a quantitative discipline (or equivalent experience)
- [Desired] Expertise in one of the following:
