Sample interview questions
Describe a complex technical program you led where the scope was initially ambiguous.

I began by defining the customer and business outcomes, mapping key dependencies and risks, and establishing a decision-making structure with accountable owners. I converted uncertainty into staged milestones and regularly adjusted the roadmap as new technical information emerged.

How do you identify and address architectural risk across multiple engineering teams?

I partner with technical leads to understand system boundaries, dependencies, failure modes, and planned changes. I make risks visible through concise reviews, quantify their impact where possible, and drive decisions on mitigation, sequencing, or investment before they become delivery blockers.

How would you balance an urgent business request with long-term platform investment?

I would clarify the expected business value, technical cost, reversibility, and opportunity cost of each option. I would present a transparent tradeoff to stakeholders, seek a phased approach when appropriate, and ensure the final decision preserves long-term platform health.

Tell us about a time you had to stop or redirect a program.

I would explain the evidence showing that the program no longer met its intended outcome, such as changed strategy, unacceptable risk, or poor return on investment. I would align sponsors on the decision, communicate it clearly to affected teams, preserve useful learnings, and redirect capacity toward higher-value work.

How do you develop other technical program managers?

I provide structured coaching on program framing, stakeholder communication, risk management, and executive storytelling. I also create opportunities for TPMs to lead increasingly complex initiatives, give actionable feedback after key program moments, and support their growth through calibration and hiring participation.

About the Role:

We’re seeking a Staff Technical Program Manager to own the design, execution, and strategic direction of complex, ambiguous programs at the group and organizational level. This is a full-time, regular position on our Engineering & Technology team. You’ll operate as a technical integrator across multiple domains — identifying architectural risk, aligning engineering, product, and business priorities, and building the execution frameworks that let the organization scale. You’ll partner closely with senior technical and business leaders to translate long-range strategy into roadmaps that hold up under ambiguity, and you’ll help shape how Hims & Hers builds and delivers technology at scale.

You Will:

  • Own group-level and org-level strategic programs with ambiguous scope and high risk, from initial framing through delivery.

  • Design execution frameworks and operating models — planning cadences, program reviews, and cross-team operating rhythms — that scale program management practices across multiple teams and domains.

  • Resolve systemic blockers and drive long-range planning rigor, balancing short-term priorities against long-term strategic direction to keep roadmap and OKR alignment intact across the organization.

  • Operate as a technical integrator, identifying architectural misalignments and system- or platform-level risks across domains.

  • Shape technical roadmap and build-vs-buy decisions by aligning engineering, product, and business constraints, and influence where technical investment can unlock new capability or improve user outcomes.

  • Act as a strategic partner to cross-functional peers, influencing priorities and decisions across multiple orgs.

  • Make the call to shut down programs or redirect resources when it’s the right outcome for the business.

  • Mentor other TPMs and contribute to growing the team through interviewing, sourcing, and onboarding.

You Have:

  • 6+ years of experience as a Technical Program Manager, including time operating at the group or organizational level.

  • Preferred Experience: Background in a highly technical, fast-paced product or platform environment; healthtech a plus.

  • Demonstrated success designing and scaling execution frameworks for programs with ambiguous scope and high risk.

  • Broad technical fluency across systems and architecture, with the judgment to identify cross-domain risk and influence engineering tradeoffs.

  • Proven ability to translate strategic vision into actionable, multi-team roadmaps, delivering through influence as the default while holding the authority to make hard calls when needed.

  • A track record of formally mentoring or developing other TPMs, with direct involvement in growing the team through interviewing and sourcing.

  • Exceptional cross-functional communication and stakeholder management skills, distilling complexity into clarity across the organization.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):

  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles

  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave

  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)

  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

  • Offsite team retreats

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you’re excited about this role, we encourage you to apply—even if you’re not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.
