Sample interview questions
How would you balance feature delivery with reliability and security investments across two infrastructure teams?

I would establish shared reliability and security objectives, make operational risks visible in planning, and reserve capacity for foundational improvements. I would use customer impact, risk severity, and strategic product goals to prioritize trade-offs transparently with Tech Leads and product stakeholders.

Describe how you develop strong Tech Leads while remaining appropriately hands-on.

I set clear decision ownership, coach leads through architecture and delivery decisions, and provide timely feedback based on observable outcomes. I stay engaged through design reviews, incident reviews, and regular one-on-ones, while avoiding becoming the bottleneck for routine technical decisions.

What metrics would you use to assess engineering health for a secrets-management and certificate platform?

I would track service availability, latency, error rates, incident frequency and recovery time, deployment health, security findings, and customer-impacting reliability measures. For team health, I would also review delivery predictability, on-call burden, quality trends, and progress on reliability commitments.

How would you handle a critical production incident involving certificate lifecycle automation?

I would ensure clear incident command, stabilize customer impact first, communicate frequently to affected stakeholders, and assign focused technical owners. After recovery, I would lead a blameless review that identifies root causes, corrective actions, ownership, and verification dates for prevention work.

How do you make sound decisions when information is incomplete and delivery pressure is high?

I clarify the decision scope, identify irreversible risks and assumptions, consult the people closest to the technical details, and choose a reversible path where possible. I document the rationale, communicate the trade-off, and revisit the decision quickly as new evidence becomes available.

Opportunity details

About this role.

Infisical is the open source security infrastructure platform that engineers use for secrets management, certificates, and privileged access management. We help developers and organizations securely manage billions of secrets every month including application configuration, database credentials, certificates, and more.

We’ve raised $19M from Y Combinator, Google, and Elad Gil, and our customers include Hugging Face, OpenRouter, LG, and NVIDIA.

Join us on a mission to make security easier for all developers — starting with secrets management. We’re looking to hire exceptional talent to join us in building the open source security infrastructure stack for the AI era.

About the role

We’re looking for an exceptional Senior Engineering Manager to lead 10–12 engineers across our Secrets Management and Certificate Management teams. Secrets Management delivers over 10 billion secrets monthly, while Certificate Management supports PKI, certificate lifecycle automation, and signing release artifacts and binaries. Both products support cloud and self-hosted deployments, including on-premises and air-gapped environments.

You’ll be responsible for developing a high-performing engineering team, driving execution across both products, and ensuring our infrastructure remains secure and reliable. You’ll work closely with our CTO and Tech Leads, staying deeply technical while empowering engineers to own their work.

You’ll be working closely with our CTO and the rest of the engineering team to:

  • Own engineering delivery: Drive execution across both teams, establish clear commitments, manage competing priorities, and ensure the team consistently delivers high-quality work.

  • Hire and develop engineers: Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development. Build a high-performing team and develop strong Tech Leads.

  • Shape engineering priorities: Balance customer needs and product development with investments in security, reliability, and developer velocity.

  • Own reliability and engineering quality: Establish reliability targets and drive improvements in observability, incident response, and operational quality.

  • Stay technically involved: Know when to zoom out and when to dive deep. Review code and technical designs, and work with Tech Leads to guide important architectural decisions and resolve difficult engineering challenges.

  • Work directly with customers: Understand their workflows and technical requirements, and translate those insights into engineering priorities.

  • Improve how the team operates: Establish lightweight processes that keep execution fast, predictable, and accountable.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineers, ideally in developer tooling, infrastructure security, or other high-stakes developer software.

  • A strong track record of building and developing high-performing teams, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and developing technical leaders.

  • Experience leading multiple engineering workstreams and driving execution through others.

  • Strong hands-on engineering background. You’re comfortable reviewing production code and technical designs.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals and sound judgment around system architecture, reliability, and technical tradeoffs.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work directly with customers.

  • A bias toward action, with the ability to make decisions with incomplete information and maintain high standards while moving quickly.

  • Based in the US or Canada (NYC preferred).

Nice to have

  • Experience working in security infrastructure or developer tools.

  • Experience leading teams developing distributed systems.

  • A track record of using AI tools to increase engineering output while maintaining production security, availability and reliability commitments.
