The role, at a glance.
The Field Security Advisor delivers cyber-extortion readiness engagements for Global 2000 customers, including executive briefings, technical workshops, and tabletop exercises. The role translates incident-response and forensic insights into practical playbooks, prioritized recommendations, and executive-ready materials. It requires deep cybersecurity experience, strong consultative facilitation, and the ability to communicate effectively with technical, legal, finance, operations, and executive stakeholders. This is a senior individual-contributor position within a distributed advisory team, with occasional customer travel. The role is best suited to an experienced incident-response, DFIR, or cyber-risk advisor who can lead high-stakes customer conversations independently.

Sample interview questions
I would first identify the customer's critical business services, decision makers, existing response plans, and likely extortion scenarios. I would create a realistic scenario with incomplete facts and time-sensitive executive decisions, then facilitate discussion across technical, legal, finance, communications, and operations teams. I would conclude with documented gaps, prioritized actions, accountable owners, and a follow-up plan.
I focus on business impact, confidence level, and required decisions rather than presenting raw technical detail. I summarize what happened, what is known and unknown, the operational or financial risk, and the specific actions needed. Supporting technical evidence is retained in an appendix or technical workstream so executives can make defensible decisions without losing essential context.
I would use MITRE ATT&CK to connect relevant adversary behaviors to detection, response, and recovery gaps. NIST CSF would provide a broader structure for assessing governance and operational readiness across identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover functions. The outcome would be a pragmatic, risk-ranked improvement plan rather than a purely theoretical framework assessment.
I would acknowledge the concern, explain the evidence and assumptions behind the finding, and distinguish observed facts from recommendations. I would frame the issue in terms of business risk and available options, including the effort and tradeoffs of remediation. The goal is to maintain trust while ensuring the organization clearly understands the exposure and can make an informed decision.
I would assess incident-response governance, escalation paths, identity controls, backup and recovery resilience, logging and detection coverage, third-party dependencies, communications procedures, legal and insurance coordination, and executive decision processes. I would also test whether these capabilities work together under pressure through scenario-based exercises. The assessment should identify both technical control gaps and operational barriers to effective recovery.
