Sample interview questions
How would you build and manage a monthly forecast for a technology organization?

I would begin with a driver-based model covering headcount, compensation, cloud consumption, vendor commitments, and other operating expenses. I would reconcile actuals to the prior forecast, update assumptions with budget owners, document material changes, and present risks and opportunities with clear recommendations.

Describe how you would analyze a significant budget-versus-actual variance in cloud spend.

I would separate the variance into usage, rate, timing, and allocation drivers, then compare consumption trends against forecast assumptions and contractual pricing. I would partner with engineering and infrastructure owners to validate the operational cause, quantify the forward-looking effect, and propose actions such as optimization, reprioritization, or a forecast update.

How do you communicate financial trade-offs to non-finance technology leaders?

I use simple operational drivers and scenario comparisons rather than finance terminology alone. For example, I would show the cost, capacity, timing, and expected business impact of alternative hiring or infrastructure choices, then clearly identify the decision required and associated risks.

What approach would you use to forecast headcount and stock-based compensation?

I would maintain a position-level model that incorporates active employees, open roles, planned start dates, backfills, compensation assumptions, and expected attrition. For stock-based compensation, I would use available grant and vesting data, reconcile to accounting outputs, and refresh estimates as hiring plans and equity events change.

Tell us about a time you worked effectively in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment.

In an ambiguous environment, I establish a practical first version of the model or process using the best available data, make assumptions visible, and create a regular cadence for validation with stakeholders. This enables timely decisions while improving accuracy as new information becomes available.

About the Role:

Hims & Hers is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst, Technology to own the FP&A for our Technology organization. Reporting to the Director, FP&A, you’ll be the finance owner for the day-to-day planning, forecasting, and analysis of one of the company’s fastest-scaling and most strategically important cost centers; from headcount and equity to cloud and commercial inference infrastructure. You’ll own the monthly forecast end to end, build the models that explain where the money goes and why, and partner directly with Technology and Finance leadership to turn operational decisions into sharp financial trade-offs. It’s a high-impact, high-visibility role with real ownership and a direct line to the leaders shaping one of the most exciting parts of our business.

You Will:

  • Own the tactical execution of the monthly forecast for the Technology organization, including headcount cost, equity, stock-based compensation (SBC), and other operating expenses.

  • Lead detailed budget-versus-actuals (BvA) analysis each month, surfacing drivers, explaining variances, and flagging risks and opportunities to Finance and Technology leadership.

  • Prepare the monthly budget deck and supporting analysis, turning the numbers into a clear narrative that leadership can act on.

  • Manage headcount pacing and partner with hiring managers on trade-offs across open roles, timing, and backfills against the plan.

  • Own other opex pacing across the Technology org, partnering with budget owners to keep spend aligned to plan.

  • Build and maintain detailed models for cloud and infrastructure spend, including commercial inference and other usage-driven costs, and partner with Technology leaders to forecast, pace, and optimize this spend.

  • Drive resource tagging and initiative-level tracking so that spend is transparent, attributable, and tied back to the work it supports.

  • Partner with Technology and Finance leadership on trade-off decisions, budget understanding, and the financial implications of strategic and operational choices.

You Have:

  • B.S. in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience in FP&A, finance business partnership, strategic finance, or a related analytic field.

  • 4+ years of experience building and manipulating financial models and large data sets in Excel or Google Sheets.

  • A strong command of forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis, with the ability to move fluidly between the details and the big picture.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with non-finance partners and translate financial concepts for a technical audience.

  • A bias toward ownership and action — comfortable operating with ambiguity in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience partnering with a Technology, Engineering, or Product organization.

  • Familiarity with cloud/infrastructure cost modeling (e.g., AWS/GCP/Azure) and usage-based or consumption-driven cost structures, including AI/ML compute or inference spend.

  • Experience with equity and SBC forecasting.

  • Experience with ERP and planning systems (e.g., Oracle NetSuite, Anaplan, Pigment, or similar).

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):

  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles

  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave

  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)

  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

  • Offsite team retreats

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you’re excited about this role, we encourage you to apply—even if you’re not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.
