Sample interview questions
How have you improved forecast accuracy for a regional sales organization?

I begin by defining consistent forecast categories, stage criteria, snapshot rules, and accuracy metrics. I then analyze error patterns by segment, manager, stage, and deal age, address root causes through pipeline inspection and coaching, and measure improvement over several forecast cycles.

Describe your approach to annual territory, quota, and capacity planning.

I start with market potential, historical attainment, account segmentation, coverage ratios, productivity ramps, and expected hiring timing. I model multiple scenarios, reconcile capacity with financial targets, facilitate leadership trade-off decisions, and document assumptions so the plan can be adjusted transparently in-year.

How do you influence senior sales leaders when you do not have direct authority?

I establish credibility through rigorous data, clear recommendations, and an understanding of the commercial impact of each decision. I involve stakeholders early, make trade-offs explicit, assign owners and dates after decisions, and follow up consistently on commitments.

How would you reconcile a sales forecast with a finance forecast?

I would align definitions, timing, currency treatment, inclusion criteria, and source data before investigating variances. I would then create a concise reconciliation that identifies drivers such as pipeline movement, close-date changes, renewals, bookings rules, or risk adjustments, along with an agreed forecast narrative for leadership.

What opportunities do you see for AI and automation in sales operations?

I would prioritize repeatable, high-volume workflows with measurable quality controls, such as pipeline-data monitoring, forecast variance alerts, account-assignment checks, meeting preparation, and action tracking. Any deployment should use approved tools, clear data governance, human review for material decisions, and adoption metrics tied to business outcomes.

About the Role

The AMER Sales Operations team is looking for a Sales Operations Director to partner with the AMER sales leader and lead the operational engine behind the region’s performance. This role defines how AMER forecasts and plans, including the weekly operating cadence, annual planning cycle, territory and quota design, and the analysis that informs leadership decisions. This is a senior individual contributor role that leads through influence in a matrixed organization, partnering closely with AMER sales leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure the region plans well, forecasts reliably, and operates efficiently.

The team is looking for someone based on the east coast or who is willing to work Eastern hours to align with the team.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the AMER operating calendar, including weekly forecast calls, pipeline inspection, performance reviews, QBRs, ad-hoc leadership meetings, and act as the first point of contact for AMER sales leadership on operational issues.
  • Shape the agenda and direct the analysis these forums depend on, and convert outcomes into tracked actions with owners and dates.
  • Lead the AMER forecast process end to end, including cadence, roll-up logic, and snapshot discipline, against the accuracy definition the region is measured on.
  • Set the standard for commit criteria, stage definitions, and pipeline hygiene, enforce those standards, diagnose forecast error to root cause, and close recurring gaps.
  • Partner with Finance on the link between the sales and financial forecast, including reconciliation, variance explanation, and authoring the forecast narrative for AMER and global leadership.
  • Lead the AMER Annual Operating Plan process for sales, including sequencing, inputs, dependencies, leadership decisions, segmentation, territory design, account distribution, quota setting, and coverage and capacity modeling.
  • Shape go-to-market structure and headcount scenarios, influence Sales Compensation on plan design, and direct in-year changes including territory moves, coverage gaps, and reorganizations.
  • Set priorities and sequence work across the Sales Operations professionals supporting AMER, while maintaining standards for analytical rigor, data integrity, and quality of recommendations.
  • Mentor experienced operations professionals, represent AMER in global Sales Operations forums, and bring global standards into the region.
  • Diagnose process, tooling, and data challenges, pioneer the use of AI and automation, retire ineffective processes, and drive adoption of approved changes with Corporate IT and global Sales Operations.

  • Direct ownership of a regional or global sales forecast process, including forecast accuracy improvement.
  • Direct ownership of an annual sales planning cycle, including segmentation, territory design, quota setting, and capacity modeling.
  • Proven ability to drive complex, cross-functional programs through influence rather than direct authority.
  • Strong analytical rigor, including the ability to structure ambiguous problems, generate insight from quantitative analysis, identify data issues, and defend recommendations under challenge.
  • Credibility with senior sales leaders and highly effective written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with Salesforce and the surrounding commercial technology stack.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally, and work across time zones.
