The role, at a glance.
This senior backend integration engineering role builds and productionizes an event-driven middleware platform using Apache Kafka and AWS. The engineer will configure Amazon MSK, Kafka Connect, CDC connectors, schema management, API Gateway, Lambda, and Java-based processing pipelines. The position also requires CI/CD, automated testing, CloudFormation infrastructure, resilient error handling, and operational documentation. Collaboration with a Lead Integration Architect and client operations teams is central to the role, including technical knowledge transfer. It is a remote role serving international client projects and requires advanced English communication.

Sample interview questions
I would use a managed or custom CDC connector to capture Salesforce events, validate and version payloads through Schema Registry, and publish to appropriately partitioned Kafka topics on Amazon MSK. I would implement retries, idempotency where required, observability, and dead-letter topics for messages that cannot be processed safely.
I assess availability-zone deployment, broker sizing, storage, throughput, replication factor, partitioning, retention, encryption, authentication, network access, monitoring, and disaster-recovery expectations. I also align topic-level settings and capacity planning with message volume, consumer patterns, and recovery objectives.
I use a schema registry and enforce compatibility policies appropriate to the consumer ecosystem, commonly backward or full compatibility. Producers and consumers are deployed independently, fields are added with safe defaults where possible, and schema changes are tested in CI before release.
I distinguish transient infrastructure failures from invalid business payloads. Transient failures receive bounded retries and monitoring, while non-recoverable records are routed with context to dead-letter topics for investigation or replay; processing must also be designed for idempotency and safe recovery.
I would codify infrastructure in CloudFormation, version application and infrastructure changes in source control, and provide automated CI/CD pipelines with environment-specific configuration. I would also deliver runbooks, architecture diagrams, dashboards, alert guidance, and structured knowledge-transfer sessions covering deployment, monitoring, incident response, and replay procedures.

- Configure and maintain Kafka Connect and CDC source connectors.
- Build REST-based event ingress using Amazon API Gateway and AWS Lambda to receive Salesforce events and publish them to Kafka.
- Develop Java stream-processing applications to transform data between Kafka topics.
- Build Java-based integration pipelines to deliver events from outbound topics to downstream systems.
- Implement dead letter queues and error-handling patterns for reliable event processing.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated tests, and code coverage.
- Build and maintain infrastructure using AWS CloudFormation, enabling the client’s operations team to redeploy and manage the environment.
- Work within the client’s Agile/sprint process and collaborate closely with the Lead Integration Architect.
- Create clear technical documentation and provide ongoing knowledge transfer to the client’s engineering and operations teams.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong hands-on experience developing backend and integration solutions with Java.
- Professional experience building event-driven and Kafka-based systems.
- Hands-on experience working with AWS services and cloud-based integrations.
- Experience building and supporting production-grade integration pipelines.
- Strong understanding of automated testing, CI/CD, and production-quality software development practices.
- Comfortable working within an Agile/sprint environment under the direction of a client architect.
- Strong communication and technical documentation skills.
- Ability to transfer technical knowledge effectively to client engineering and operations teams.
- Advanced written and verbal English communication skills.
Must Have:
- Strong Java development experience, including stream processing and API components.
- Strong hands-on experience with Apache Kafka and Amazon MSK, including:
- Kafka clusters and topics
- Kafka Connect
- Change Data Capture (CDC)
- Experience with Schema Registry, including schema versioning and evolution.
- Strong experience with AWS serverless technologies, including:

- Strong communication and documentation skills for technical knowledge transfer.
- Advanced written and verbal English communication skills.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Salesforce CDC or Salesforce event integrations.
- Experience implementing dead letter queues (DLQs) and error-handling patterns in event-driven systems. Kafka-AWS-Integration-Engineer.
