Sample interview questions
I first verify the measurement chart, construction details, fabric properties, and intended fit against the approved sample. I draft or adjust the base pattern, add seam allowances and production markings, check all pattern pieces and notches, then prepare graded files and clear revision documentation for the manufacturer.
I establish grade rules based on the target customer, garment type, fit intent, and measurement specifications. I check that increments remain proportional across key points such as bust, waist, hip, rise, sleeve, and length, then validate the graded pattern through measurement checks and, when possible, fit samples.
I account for stretch, recovery, drape, thickness, shrinkage, grain behavior, and seam performance. For example, a knit garment may require negative ease and stretch-sensitive construction, while woven or lace materials may need different ease, seam allowances, stabilization, and handling instructions.
I would compare the sample to the specification sheet and pattern measurements, identify whether the issue originates in the pattern, grading, cutting, fabric behavior, or sewing construction, and document the findings clearly. I would then issue a controlled pattern or construction revision, communicate the required changes to the factory, and track the next sample for confirmation.
I maintain organized digital folders, version naming conventions, revision logs, and a prioritized tracker for deadlines, sample status, and open issues. I communicate questions early and asynchronously, provide manufacturers with complete files and instructions, and reserve time for quality checks before releasing each pattern version.
