Sample interview questions
Describe a service-mesh migration you led across multiple teams or clusters. How did you sequence the rollout and manage risk?

I would begin with an inventory of services, traffic patterns, dependencies, and readiness gaps, then define a phased rollout with measurable entry and exit criteria. I would pilot low-risk services, automate policy and observability baselines, and use canary migrations before expanding by business unit. Clear ownership, rollback procedures, and incident feedback loops are essential to keeping a multi-team migration on schedule.

How would you design a multi-region resilience strategy for a healthcare platform?

I would start by classifying critical user journeys and setting SLOs, RPOs, and RTOs for each one. The design would address data replication, failure domains, traffic management, identity dependencies, operational runbooks, and regular failover testing. I would prioritize the highest-impact journeys first and communicate the cost-versus-resilience tradeoffs to leadership.

What metrics would you use to demonstrate that platform investments are delivering business value?

I would combine adoption and reliability metrics with developer-experience and cost measures. Examples include golden-path adoption rate, deployment lead time, change-failure rate, incident frequency and duration, infrastructure cost per workload, and developer sentiment. Metrics should be tied to explicit baselines and reviewed regularly so platform work is evaluated as a product.

How do you resolve an architecture disagreement between senior engineers from independent organizations?

I make the decision criteria explicit: customer impact, reliability, security, operational complexity, migration cost, and long-term maintainability. I solicit the strongest evidence for each approach, document tradeoffs in an RFC, and drive a timely decision through the appropriate technical forum. Once a decision is made, I focus on shared execution and revisit it only when new evidence materially changes the assumptions.

Give an example of debugging a difficult production issue in a distributed, multi-hop system.

I would first establish the scope and user impact, then trace a representative request across application, network, proxy, authentication, and dependency layers. I would compare healthy and failing paths, inspect recent configuration and deployment changes, and use telemetry to isolate whether the failure is caused by routing, mTLS, timeouts, policy, or environment drift. After mitigation, I would implement a durable fix, add targeted alerts or tests, and document the learning for other teams.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a Senior Staff Platform Engineer to set technical direction for our platform, not just build within it. This is the most senior IC role on the team: you’ll own architecture for our most consequential, cross-org infrastructure initiatives, and be the person other senior and staff engineers look to when a design decision needs to hold up across every team that depends on it. Recent and current flagship work at this level includes leading the Istio service mesh rollout as single-threaded owner across the entire organization; shaping the architecture behind our Multi-Region Resilience Program; and owning the technical direction of our AI-enriched Service Catalog. You’ll operate at the intersection of deep technical execution and org-wide influence, staying hands-on in critical code and infrastructure paths while setting the patterns other teams build on.

You Will:

  • Own group-critical platform initiatives: Take single-threaded ownership of multi-quarter, cross-org programs — service mesh adoption across independent clusters and business units, multi-region resilience strategy, and foundational platform initiatives. Align systems and abstractions to long-term organizational strategy.

  • Set direction others build on: Define the architectural patterns, golden paths, and platform primitives (Istio mTLS/traffic policy, AI agent golden paths, MCP-backed service APIs) that other engineers implement against. Create shared components that improve delivery consistency across teams rather than one-off solutions per squad.

  • Lead through hands-on technical excellence: Stay deeply engaged in the hardest parts of the systems you own — debugging production incidents at the mesh layer, hardening migration tooling, resolving cross-team architectural conflicts — earning credibility through visible, high-quality technical work rather than through title alone.

  • Drive execution across organizational boundaries: Coordinate rollouts that depend on multiple engineering orgs contributing resources on a schedule (e.g., a named engineering champion per business unit for a service mesh migration). Anticipate systemic blockers — resourcing gaps, conflicting migration sequencing, environment drift between staging and production — and resolve them before they stall the program.

  • Own testing infrastructure strategy end-to-end: Serve as DRI for how engineering teams validate changes before production, spanning iteration environments, pre-prod confidence gates, and multi-service validation for cross-service changes.

  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers: Coach engineers below you on system design, migration strategy, and how to navigate ambiguity in cross-team initiatives. Raise the technical bar of the org by example, not just by review.

  • Drive org-wide reduction of technical debt and cost: Lead large-scale infrastructure consolidations and migrations (CI/CD platform changes, artifact registry modernization, dependency upgrades) end-to-end, with the rollout discipline, cost modeling, and stakeholder communication that a multi-hundred-repo change demands.

  • Establish the metrics that prove platform investment works: Define and drive adoption of the leading indicators — adoption rate, incident trends, cost trajectory, developer sentiment — that let leadership see platform work as a business asset, not overhead.

You Have:

  • 12+ years in Platform, Infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE roles, including demonstrated ownership of at least one initiative that spanned multiple teams or business units, not just a single team’s roadmap.

  • Deep, production-proven expertise in Kubernetes/EKS, service mesh (Istio strongly preferred — mTLS, traffic shaping, sidecar architecture, multi-cluster rollout), and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) at meaningful scale.

  • A track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical programs from architecture through execution — including the ability to produce the kind of cost/risk analysis and phased proposal that secures leadership buy-in and funding.

  • Experience debugging and resolving production incidents in distributed, multi-hop systems (e.g., proxy/sidecar-layer failures, cross-service auth issues, environment-specific config drift between staging and production).

  • Proficiency in at least one of Go, Python, TypeScript, or Java, with the judgment to know when to write code yourself versus when to set direction and delegate.

  • A demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority — driving alignment across engineering orgs that don’t report to you, and building the kind of technical credibility that makes other senior engineers want to build on your patterns rather than route around them.

  • Experience mentoring Staff-level engineers and shaping how a broader engineering org approaches system design, not just your immediate team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AI-native platform tooling: agentic tooling, MCP-backed APIs and golden paths for deploying AI agents in production.

  • A track record of driving large-scale cost or infrastructure consolidation initiatives (CI/CD platform migrations, cloud cost optimization, vendor consolidation) with measurable business impact.

  • Experience with multi-region or high-availability architecture, including RPO/RTO planning and per-journey SLO definition.

  • Comfortable authoring RFCs and leadership-facing technical proposals and presenting them directly to senior engineering leadership.

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):

  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles

  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave

  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)

  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

  • Offsite team retreats

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you’re excited about this role, we encourage you to apply—even if you’re not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.
