Sample interview questions
I would establish explicit reliability and product objectives, make technical risks visible in planning, and reserve capacity for operational improvements and debt reduction. Decisions would be guided by customer impact, regulatory risk, service-level objectives, and the reversibility of proposed changes.
I would first clarify the desired outcome, constraints, and decision owner, then facilitate discovery of viable options with the team. I would use written proposals, measurable tradeoffs, and staged milestones so the team can move forward while reducing uncertainty.
I would prioritize clear service-level objectives, robust observability, idempotent workflows, reconciliation processes, tested failure handling, and incident response readiness. I would also ensure changes are reviewed carefully, released progressively, and supported by meaningful automated and operational testing.
I give senior engineers ownership of meaningful technical and organizational problems, define expected outcomes and decision boundaries, and provide timely, specific feedback. Regular coaching, calibration against team goals, and visible opportunities to lead help maintain both growth and accountability.
I would treat AI-generated output as untrusted implementation input that requires the same or greater review rigor as other code. The team would use clear guidance on sensitive data, mandatory testing and peer review, evaluation of generated changes, and production safeguards such as staged releases and monitoring.
About this role.
Roman aqueducts quietly carried water across cities and made daily life possible. Their value was not in the structures themselves, but in everything they enabled.
The Bank Accounts team plays a similar role at Mercury. We build the foundation for depository accounts*: managing money held in Mercury accounts and helping customers move money between accounts they own.
The work ahead is especially exciting: as Mercury is opening its own bank, this team will build a major part of the foundation needed to manage customer accounts at that scale. The systems and capabilities we build will support how customers open, use, manage, and move money between their accounts.
Your job as an engineering manager at Mercury is to make our banking* core run so smoothly that people barely notice it’s there.
In this role, you will:
- Lead a team of 4 to 8 senior engineers to deliver high-availability banking services.
- Translate company and product direction into clear, measurable team objectives.
- Build a predictable delivery system that makes progress, risks, and tradeoffs visible.

- Partner with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to make Mercury’s banking products reliable, understandable, and useful.
- Hire and onboard engineers while maintaining a consistent, high-quality interview process.
- Hold the team accountable for using AI-assisted development responsibly, with appropriate testing, evaluation, review, and production safeguards.
- Give clear, useful feedback to engineers at every level.
