Sample interview questions
How would you design an idempotent PIX payment-initiation API?

I would require a client-provided idempotency key, persist it with a request fingerprint and payment state, and enforce uniqueness at the database layer. Repeated requests with the same key would return the original result rather than create another payment, while mismatched payloads would be rejected.

How do you handle an uncertain outcome when a bank API times out during payment submission?

I would avoid immediately resubmitting the payment because the bank may have accepted it. I would mark the transaction as pending, query the provider's status endpoint or use webhook events, and only retry when the provider's idempotency and status semantics make retry safe.

What techniques would you use to maintain consistency across a payment service and asynchronous downstream systems?

I would use durable transaction states, an outbox pattern for reliable event publication, idempotent consumers, and compensating workflows where required. Monitoring and reconciliation jobs would detect and resolve discrepancies between internal records and external providers.

How would you investigate a sudden increase in failed PIX transactions?

I would begin with dashboards and logs segmented by provider, error code, endpoint, release version, and transaction stage. After identifying whether the issue is internal, provider-related, or data-specific, I would mitigate it through feature flags, routing controls, retries where safe, and a documented root-cause fix.

How would you secure integrations with Brazilian banks and payment service providers?

I would use strong service authentication such as mTLS or OAuth where supported, securely manage and rotate secrets, validate request and webhook signatures, encrypt sensitive data, and maintain audit trails. I would also apply least-privilege access controls, rate limits, input validation, and security monitoring.

  • Integrate with Brazilian banks, payment service providers, and external financial systems through APIs and other integration mechanisms.

  • Build reliable, high-performance backend systems with a strong focus on transaction consistency, idempotency, fault tolerance, and system availability.

  • Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions to improve system stability and performance.

  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and continuously improve the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of payment services.

  • Support payment-related security, risk control, and compliance requirements in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong hands-on backend development experience with Java and PIX, preferably using Spring Boot and related frameworks.

  • Experience with PIX, Brazilian payment systems, or integrations with Brazilian banks and local payment service providers.

  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, distributed systems, and database design.

  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL; familiarity with caching, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing is a plus.
