AI Summary

The role, at a glance.

Envato is hiring an Engineer III to build and maintain the high-impact content-management systems behind its creative marketplace and AI tools. The role emphasizes backend engineering, ownership of well-defined features from discovery through production, reliable testing, and effective production-incident resolution. Ruby on Rails experience is useful, while equivalent backend framework experience and sound engineering judgment are equally relevant. The engineer will collaborate closely with senior peers, experiment with AI-assisted development practices, and work with infrastructure and observability tools such as AWS, Terraform, Docker, Buildkite, Datadog, and Rollbar.

Core skills

Skills and capabilities most closely associated with this opportunity.

Sample interview questions
Describe a backend feature you owned from initial discussion through production release.

I would explain how I clarified the user and system requirements, broke the work into safe deliverable increments, aligned the design with stakeholders, implemented and tested the feature, and monitored its production behavior after release. I would also highlight a lesson or improvement identified during the delivery.

How do you approach diagnosing a production incident in a content-processing system?

I start by assessing customer impact and stabilizing the service, then use logs, metrics, traces, and recent deployment history to narrow the failure mode. After identifying the cause, I implement a durable fix, add regression coverage and monitoring where appropriate, and document the incident so the team can prevent recurrence.

What makes code reliable and maintainable in a Rails or comparable backend application?

Reliable code has clear boundaries, understandable naming, appropriate automated tests, explicit failure handling, and observability for important workflows. I aim for simple designs first, make trade-offs visible in reviews, and avoid abstractions that do not solve a demonstrated problem.

How would you evaluate AI-generated code before merging it into a production codebase?

I would treat it as an untrusted draft: verify that it meets the requirements, review security and edge cases, ensure it follows existing architecture and conventions, and run relevant tests. I would also check that the code is understandable and maintainable by the team rather than accepting it solely because it passes a basic test.

How do you work effectively with lead and senior engineers while retaining ownership of your work?

I bring a clear problem statement, proposed approach, and specific questions to design discussions, then incorporate feedback and communicate progress and risks early. I use pairing and review feedback to improve my craft while remaining accountable for delivery, quality, and follow-through.

Opportunity details

About this role.

You’re ready for more than the next ticket

You’ve got a few years of engineering experience behind you and you’re already good at what you do. You’re now looking for more in a role than being handed a ticket, expected to ship it and move on.

You want to work alongside people who will make you better. You want to tackle meaningful technical problems and have room to try things. You want to be in a place that takes AI seriously without treating it as a shortcut for good thinking.

That’s what this role is about.

The work you’ll get stuck into

At Envato, we help creative professionals bring their ideas to life through world-class creative assets and AI tools. Behind the scenes, our Content Management team builds the systems that make all of that possible. Content upload, processing, metadata, storage, distribution and the human and AI-assisted review that keeps our marketplace moving.

It is complex, high-impact work and you’ll be right in the middle of it.

You’ll take ownership of features and well defined projects from the first conversation through to production.

You’ll build software that is reliable, well-tested and designed to last, while getting to know the platform and the people who use it. When something breaks, you’ll help understand why, fix it properly and leave the system better than you found it.

A place to build your craft

You’ll work closely with Lead and Senior Engineers through regular pairing, feedback and problem solving. This is a team that cares about strong engineering craft, but isn’t precious about how things have always been done. If you have a better idea, we want to hear it.

We work AI-first. We use agents to write, test and review code, but we’re still working out the best ways to use them. You’ll have the freedom to experiment, challenge old ways of working and bring ideas that move us forward.

You’ll be a great fit if…

You have experience building software, strong back-end capability and a real interest in doing the work well. Ruby on Rails would be useful, though experience in a comparable framework matters just as much.

You know the value of clean code, sensible trade-offs and testing, and you’re comfortable getting curious when a production issue needs solving.

You’re interested in using AI in practical ways, but you bring your own judgement rather than blindly accepting the output.

Experience with AWS, Terraform, Docker, Buildkite, Datadog, Rollbar, or content-heavy systems is helpful, but what matters most is your appetite to learn quickly, take ownership and bring more than the expected answer.
