Sample interview questions
How would you design a scalable MuleSoft integration between Salesforce and an ERP system?

I would begin by defining the data contracts, ownership, volume expectations, and error-handling requirements. I would use an API-led architecture with separate system, process, and experience APIs, implement reusable transformations, secure endpoints with OAuth or mutual TLS where appropriate, and use queues or asynchronous processing for high-volume or failure-prone flows. I would also add monitoring, correlation IDs, retries, dead-letter handling, and clear operational runbooks.

What steps do you take when a MuleSoft application fails in production?

I first assess impact and stabilize the service, using logs, correlation IDs, Anypoint Monitoring, and downstream system status to isolate the failure. I determine whether the issue is related to connectivity, transformation, authentication, capacity, configuration, or data quality, then apply a safe remediation such as a rollback, configuration correction, replay, or targeted hotfix. After recovery, I document root cause and add tests, alerts, or resilience improvements to prevent recurrence.

How do you apply API security and governance in MuleSoft?

I use API Manager policies to enforce authentication, authorization, rate limiting, client management, and threat protection. Sensitive traffic is protected through TLS, secrets are stored outside source control, and OAuth scopes or client credentials are applied according to least-privilege principles. I also maintain API specifications, versioning standards, naming conventions, auditability, and automated policy checks in the deployment process.

How would you structure CI/CD for MuleSoft applications?

I would keep application code, configuration templates, API specifications, and tests under version control, with environment-specific values injected securely through a pipeline. The pipeline should run unit tests, static checks, package the deployable artifact, publish it to an artifact repository, and deploy through controlled promotion stages. Post-deployment smoke tests, monitoring validation, approval gates for production, and a rollback strategy are essential.

Describe how you would mentor a junior integration developer during a complex delivery.

I would break the work into clear, achievable components and explain the architectural decisions behind each one, such as API layering, error handling, and data transformation patterns. I would pair on early implementation tasks, provide constructive code-review feedback, and encourage the developer to test and document their work independently. Regular check-ins would help remove blockers while progressively increasing their ownership of the solution.
