Sample interview questions
I start with a process and architecture assessment covering chart-of-accounts governance, entity structure, approval workflows, master data, integrations, and reporting. I then prioritize improvements by control risk, business impact, and scalability, establish a tested release process, and document ownership so the environment can grow without creating unmanaged customization.
I would map the current workflow from requisition through payment, identify manual handoffs and control gaps, and define measurable outcomes such as cycle time, exception rate, and touchless invoice processing. I would configure approval rules and vendor-data standards, integrate relevant procurement or AP tools, test with business users, and monitor adoption after release.
I translate finance needs into clear functional requirements, acceptance criteria, data contracts, and control requirements before development starts. I maintain a prioritized roadmap, require code review and sandbox testing, validate business outcomes with finance stakeholders, and ensure that documentation and support ownership remain internal even when external resources are used.
I define authoritative sources for key data domains, standardize master-data ownership, build reconciliation controls between systems, and monitor integration failures and data-quality exceptions. For reporting, I validate metric definitions with Finance and Accounting and use repeatable reconciliations to ensure operational dashboards align with the general ledger.
I explain the business impact first, such as delayed close or incorrect reporting, then describe the issue in plain language with a concise recommendation and decision needed. I avoid implementation jargon, provide timing and risk tradeoffs, and follow up with an execution plan that makes ownership and next steps clear.
