The role, at a glance.
SeatGeek is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its R&D organization to build and scale a high-volume ticketing marketplace. The role spans backend services, data-intensive systems, infrastructure, and user-facing product experiences, with frequent production releases. Engineers address complex performance and reliability challenges around onsales, inventory tracking, interactive venue maps, and event matching. The team uses a broad modern stack including Python, Go, C#, React, AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka, and Postgres, while valuing problem-solving ability over experience with particular tools. This is a US-remote role with an optional office arrangement and strong cross-functional collaboration expectations.

Sample interview questions
I would explain the system context, its users and reliability requirements, then describe my technical decisions and trade-offs. I would quantify the outcome through measures such as latency, error rate, throughput, uptime, deployment frequency, or customer impact.
I would first establish expected traffic patterns and service-level objectives, then load-test critical paths such as inventory reads, reservations, checkout, and payment integration. I would use caching, rate limits, queues, autoscaling, observability, and graceful degradation, while validating that inventory consistency and idempotency protections hold under failure conditions.
I would begin with the user-facing symptom and use traces, metrics, logs, and database diagnostics to isolate the bottleneck. After validating the root cause, I would implement and measure a targeted fix, add regression coverage and monitoring, and document the learning for the team.
I favor small, reversible changes protected by automated tests, code review, feature flags, staged rollouts, and clear monitoring. Frequent deployment is sustainable when teams have ownership of production health, strong observability, and a reliable rollback process.
I align the discussion around product requirements, operational constraints, maintainability, and measurable decision criteria rather than personal preference. I seek input from affected engineers, document trade-offs, make a timely decision, and revisit it if production evidence shows the assumptions were wrong.
