Sample interview questions
How would you convert a manual audit procedure into an AI-enabled product workflow?

I would first map the current process, inputs, decision points, controls, outputs, and exceptions with practitioners. I would then identify repeatable tasks suitable for automation, define where professional judgment must remain with the auditor, and write acceptance criteria and quality checks with product and engineering.

Describe how you assess ICFR during a financial statement audit.

I begin by understanding the relevant processes and risks, identifying key controls, and evaluating their design. I then test operating effectiveness using appropriate evidence, assess exceptions and compensating controls, and connect the control conclusion to the substantive audit approach.

How would you ensure an AI agent’s work is suitable for an audit workflow?

I would establish clear task boundaries, required source evidence, traceability, review checkpoints, exception handling, and measurable accuracy thresholds. Outputs should be explainable and auditable, with human review required for conclusions involving material judgment or elevated risk.

Tell us about a time you explained a complex accounting issue to a non-accounting stakeholder.

I focus first on the business decision and risk, then replace technical jargon with a structured explanation of the issue, alternatives, evidence, and recommendation. I validate understanding through examples and document the agreed requirements or decision criteria.

How do you prioritize competing workflow improvements requested by audit-firm customers?

I assess each request by user impact, risk reduction, frequency of use, scalability across firms, implementation effort, and strategic alignment. I prioritize high-volume or high-risk pain points that can be standardized, while maintaining a transparent feedback loop with customers on trade-offs and timing.

About the Role

Audit and assurance are entering a new era.

Advances in AI are transforming how firms prepare for engagements, evaluate evidence, and deliver assurance. Many of the workflows that have defined the profession for decades are being rebuilt from the ground up.

At Fieldguide, we’re building the AI-native platform that powers modern audit and advisory firms. Our platform combines workflow, collaboration, and AI agents to help firms operate more efficiently while maintaining the rigor and quality the profession requires.

As an Agent Architect, you’ll join a small, specialized team working at the intersection of audit expertise, product development, and AI. While you won’t be performing audits for clients in this role, you will work closely with audit professionals and Fieldguide’s engineering team to design and build the next generation of audit workflows.

This role is ideal for someone who understands how audits work today—but is excited to rethink how they should work in an AI-driven future.

What You’ll Do

  • Help design the AI-powered workflows that will define the future of audit and assurance.

  • Partner closely with engineering, product, and design teams to translate real-world audit processes into scalable product capabilities.

  • Work directly with audit firms using Fieldguide to understand their workflows, pain points, and opportunities for automation.

  • Identify edge cases, controls, and quality requirements to ensure the product meets the standards required for professional services workflows.

  • Collaborate with our ML team to develop AI agent capabilities that assist with tasks such as document analysis, testing procedures, and evidence evaluation.

  • Help rethink long-standing audit processes and shape how AI can augment professional judgment.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting + CPA license or Master’s degree in Accounting.

  • 8-10+ years of experience in audit at a leading public accounting firm at the Senior Manager level or above.

  • Experience auditing financial statements end-to-end, including designing and executing audit workpapers across financial statement areas.

  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial statement preparation.

  • Experience performing financial statement audits end-to-end, including planning and risk assessment, evaluating internal controls (ICFR), executing substantive testing across key balance sheet and income statement areas, and reviewing financial statements and disclosures.

  • Experience working across multiple clients and industries.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for accuracy.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex accounting concepts into clear product requirements.

  • Strong prioritization skills and the ability to focus on the highest-impact work.

Bonus Points

  • Curiosity about AI and how it will reshape professional services.

  • Interest in working closely with engineers to build new systems from the ground up.

  • Comfort operating in ambiguous environments and building without a predefined playbook.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across teams.

  • A deep interest in improving how audits are performed—not just digitizing existing workflows.
