Opportunity details

About this role.

Since 2019, Mercury has been rebuilding banking* for the way modern companies work. We combine thoughtful design with strong engineering to offer checking and savings accounts, cards, payments, credit, treasury and the analytics that tie it all together. Everything we build comes from one belief: finance should be carefully crafted, fast and transparent, and it should stay out of the way so founders can get back to building.

That belief only holds up if the right people are building it. Hiring is one of the most important ways we shape Mercury’s future. In this role, you’ll directly influence the teams building our products and the experience of our customers. As a Technical Recruiter, you’ll own a focused set of searches from kickoff to close and partner closely with hiring managers along the way.

*Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.

What you’ll do

  • Own full-cycle recruiting for engineering and data roles, from kick-off to close
  • Build and maintain strong, healthy pipelines across multiple roles simultaneously
  • Source candidates proactively and creatively to engage top technical talent
  • Develop a deep understanding of Mercury’s products, engineering challenges, and team needs
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with stakeholders on pipeline health, progress, blockers, and recruiting timeline
  • Own offer strategy and closing for your searches
  • Deliver a candidate experience that’s thoughtful and transparent from first touch to final decision

You should have:

  • 1-3 years of experience as a technical recruiter supporting engineering or data teams
  • Strong sourcing skills that go beyond LinkedIn Recruiter
  • Deep curiosity about the products and teams you support, and a strong understanding of how the roles you hire for drive impact
  • Strong alignment with Mercury’s values and ability to represent them authentically to candidates and your teammates
  • Enjoy building diverse, inclusive, and high-performing teams, and lead with deep empathy, kindness, and care for the work you do
  • Have a strong sense of urgency and ownership for the work you do, and be willing to help support hiring efforts across other areas of the business, as needed

Sample interview questions
Describe how you would launch and manage a new engineering search from kickoff through offer acceptance.

I would begin with an intake session to clarify the business need, success profile, must-have skills, interview process, compensation constraints, and target market. I would translate that into a sourcing plan and calibration criteria, provide regular pipeline updates, remove blockers with the hiring manager, and manage candidate communication and closing through acceptance.

How do you source technical candidates beyond LinkedIn Recruiter?

I combine targeted web research with GitHub, technical communities, referral networks, conference or meetup communities, alumni networks, portfolio sites, and carefully personalized outbound outreach. I track which channels create qualified and diverse pipelines, then adjust the approach based on response and conversion data.

How would you assess whether a candidate is appropriate for a specialized engineering role if you are not the technical interviewer?

I would build a detailed understanding of the team’s technical environment, the problem the hire will solve, and the capabilities that distinguish strong candidates. During screening, I would validate relevant experience through structured questions, then rely on calibrated technical interviewers for deep skills assessment while sharing clear candidate context.

A hiring manager says the pipeline is weak and wants more candidates immediately. What would you do?

I would review funnel data and recent feedback to determine whether the issue is sourcing volume, candidate fit, compensation, interview speed, or an overly narrow profile. I would present concrete options, such as revising search criteria, expanding target companies, improving outreach, or accelerating interview scheduling, and agree on actions and timelines with the manager.

How do you create a thoughtful and transparent candidate experience when a candidate is not selected?

I set expectations about stages, timelines, and communication from the first interaction, and I keep candidates informed if plans change. When declining a candidate, I communicate promptly and respectfully, provide appropriate high-level feedback when possible, and leave the door open for future roles where there may be a stronger fit.
