About this role.
From Fivetran’s founding until now, our mission has remained the same: to make access to data as simple and reliable as electricity. With Fivetran, customer data arrives in their warehouses, canonical and ready to query, with no engineering or maintenance required. We’re proud that more organizations continue to leverage our technology every day to become truly data-driven.
About Us
Fivetran and dbt Labs are bringing together two industry-leading companies with a shared mission: helping organizations unlock the full value of their data.
Together, we’re delivering the data infrastructure layer that helps organizations move, transform, and trust their data — from the moment data moves, through every transformation, to the context teams and AI systems rely on.
Fivetran helps organizations automate data movement across the systems, clouds, engines, and tools they rely on. dbt Labs pioneered analytics engineering, helping teams transform data into reliable, governed insights. Together, we support thousands of organizations as they build a trusted foundation for analytics, AI, and better business decisions.
As we bring our teams and technology together, we’re building on the strengths of both companies while continuing to deliver the products and experiences our customers know and trust. It’s an exciting time to join us: we’re creating a company with the scale, talent, and technology to help more organizations put their data to work with greater speed, confidence, and impact.
During this transition period, you may see references to both Fivetran and dbt Labs throughout our recruiting process as we integrate our teams, systems, and career sites.
About the Role
Fivetran and dbt Labs are building data pipelines to power the modern data stack for thousands of companies.
Fivetran’s SAP connectors move enterprise data out of SAP and into modern data platforms. We’re looking for an all-round SAP specialist who combines strong ABAP skills with deep knowledge of SAP outbound interfacing. You’ll work on the interfaces and data extraction mechanisms that let Fivetran reliably pull data from SAP ECC and S/4HANA systems, and you’ll help customers and internal teams get the most out of them.
You will be the SAP specialist within a team of Java developers. Your knowledge and input is crucial to the success of this team.
Technologies You’ll Use
- ABAP programming using traditional SAPGUI as well as Eclipse (or other IDE).
- Databases (HANA/Oracle/etc)
- Cloud environments (AWS/GCP/MS)
- AI tools Claude/Codex/
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance ABAP components (function modules, classes, CDS views, and enhancements) to drive scalable outbound data extraction from SAP systems.
- Own and modernize internal SAP test environments to accelerate feature development for current connectors and upcoming public cloud / BTP integrations.
- Architect robust outbound interfaces leveraging OData, standard and generic DataSources, ODP/ODQ delta frameworks, and RFC connections.
- Optimize data throughput and reliability across ECC and S/4HANA landscapes by diagnosing and resolving extraction performance bottlenecks and delta synchronization issues.
- Analyze underlying SAP database structures (HANA and traditional DBs) to unlock efficiency gains and streamline data pipeline performance.
- Partner closely with engineering, support, and customers to translate complex business requirements into elegant technical architectures.
- Deliver end-to-end support for enterprise clients by troubleshooting complex connectivity, authorization, and configuration challenges in customer SAP environments.
- Establish technical design standards, interface specifications, and best practice documentation for internal and external knowledge sharing.
- Evaluate and integrate emerging SAP technologies—including SAP Datasphere and BTP—to keep Fivetran’s connectors at the forefront of modern data integration.
Skills We’re Looking For
- 10+ years of hands-on SAP development experience, with strong ABAP skills (classic and modern ABAP, ABAP OO, ABAP for HANA)
- Deep knowledge of SAP outbound interfacing:
- OData (v2 and v4): service design, SEGW, performance, and security
- SAP extractors: standard and generic DataSources, delta handling, ODP/ODQ, CDS-based extraction
- RFC: function modules, BAPIs, destinations, and tRFC/qRFC
- Solid working knowledge of both SAP ECC and S/4HANA, including the differences in data models and extraction options between them
- Good knowledge of databases: SQL, query performance and tuning, SAP HANA, and relational database concepts
- Understanding of SAP data models and key modules (e.g., FI/CO, MM, SD)
- Experience with SAP authorizations and technical user/role setup for interfaces
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical stakeholders
- Fluent in English
- Experience in code reviews, design, troubleshooting and testing
- Ability to use conversational AI systems (like Claude, ChatGPT, and internal chatbots) to support researching, authoring, reviewing, and synthesizing various SDLC artifacts such as TDDs, PRDs, Postmortems, Test Plans, and Proposals
Bonus Skills
- Experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including connecting SAP to cloud data platforms
- Java development experience
- Familiarity with data integration/ELT tools and data warehousing concepts
- Knowledge of SLT, SAP Datasphere, BW and SAP BTP.

Sample interview questions
I would first identify the required entities, data volumes, latency requirements, and available extraction mechanisms. I would favor standard or CDS-based extraction with ODP/ODQ where appropriate, implement robust delta handling, and validate authorization and operational requirements. I would then load-test throughput, monitor queue behavior and database impact, and document recovery procedures for failed or delayed synchronization.
Typical causes include incorrect delta initialization, missing or inconsistent change pointers, queue backlogs, authorization problems, extractor configuration changes, and data-model differences between ECC and S/4HANA. I would inspect the extractor setup, ODQ queues, application logs, RFC connectivity, and relevant SAP transactions, then reproduce the issue in a controlled test environment before applying a corrective change.
I would use OData when a well-defined service interface, selective access, and API-oriented consumption are important. RFC can be more suitable for invoking custom function modules or accessing capabilities not exposed through OData, while DataSources and ODP are often preferable for high-volume operational extraction with established delta semantics. The choice depends on scalability, security, SAP release support, and the required data contract.
I start by measuring the end-to-end path and identifying whether the bottleneck is in ABAP logic, SQL execution, database access, network transfer, or downstream processing. I reduce unnecessary data movement, use set-based database operations, review execution plans, ensure appropriate filtering and indexing, and avoid inefficient nested loops or row-by-row access. I validate improvements with representative production-like data volumes.
I would describe the business impact first, such as which datasets cannot be synchronized and whether existing reporting is affected. Then I would explain the issue in plain language, identify the specific action needed from their SAP or security team, and provide a concise checklist with ownership and expected validation steps. I would keep technical diagnostics available as an appendix for their administrators.
