Sample interview questions
How do you balance legal risk with the need to close a strategically important commercial deal quickly?

I first identify the non-negotiable risks, such as liability exposure, regulatory obligations, intellectual property ownership, and data protections. I then explain the commercial trade-offs in clear terms, offer practical fallback positions, and prioritize issues that materially affect the company so the team can move quickly without accepting avoidable risk.

Describe your approach to negotiating a complex customer agreement with a sophisticated enterprise buyer.

I prepare by understanding the deal economics, product model, customer use case, and internal risk tolerance. During negotiation, I focus on the provisions most likely to create disproportionate exposure, use approved positions where possible, and maintain a collaborative tone that helps both parties reach workable outcomes.

How would you support sales and marketing teams launching a new product or pricing model?

I would engage early to understand the offering, target customers, claims, pricing structure, and operational workflow. I would identify legal and regulatory requirements, create practical guidance and templates, and partner with the teams to resolve issues before launch rather than reviewing materials only at the end.

Tell us about a time you had to make a legal recommendation with incomplete information.

In a fast-moving environment, I assess the available facts, distinguish reversible from irreversible decisions, and identify the most significant legal and business risks. I provide a clear recommendation with assumptions and escalation points, enabling stakeholders to act while ensuring that new information is incorporated promptly.

What makes an in-house lawyer an effective strategic partner to business leaders?

An effective partner understands the company’s goals, communicates in commercially relevant language, and offers solutions rather than simply identifying problems. They build trust by being responsive, consistent, and candid about risk, while helping leaders make informed decisions that support sustainable growth.
