About our Data Discipline
We have a strong culture of data-driven decision making across the whole company. Data is central to how we understand our customers, shape our products, manage risk and grow Monzo sustainably. We believe in empowering teams with high-quality, trusted data and self-serve analytics, while creating space for Data practitioners to focus on the highest-impact questions, opportunities and decisions.
Our Data Discipline is deeply embedded in Monzo’s product areas. Data Scientists, Analytics Engineers, and Machine Learning Engineers work in cross-functional squads alongside Engineers, Designers, Product Managers and other disciplines. This means Data is not a downstream service, and instead we shape strategy, challenge thinking, build the data foundations teams need to move quickly, and share accountability for customer and commercial outcomes.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by aligning on business outcomes, such as incremental funded accounts, retained customers, or lifetime value. I would combine experimentation, causal inference, attribution inputs, and cohort economics into a shared decision framework, then communicate uncertainty and trade-offs clearly so investment choices remain evidence-based.
I set a clear operating model, hire for complementary strengths, and create growth paths for both individual contributors and managers. I use regular coaching, outcome-oriented goals, and transparent performance expectations while protecting time for technical quality and strategic work.
I first clarify the customer and commercial decision that must be made, identify assumptions and success metrics, and map the minimum evidence needed. I then sequence quick diagnostic analysis with longer-term instrumentation, experimentation, or modelling work, ensuring stakeholders receive useful recommendations throughout rather than only at the end.
I would define the relevant interaction mechanism, such as referrals, shared products, or increased utility from adoption, and establish a counterfactual for organic growth. Cohort analysis, geographic or temporal variation, experiments where appropriate, and causal modelling would help estimate incrementality rather than confusing correlation with network effects.
I frame the discussion around the shared objective, state the evidence and its limitations plainly, and present viable options with expected impact and risk. I seek early stakeholder input, make the recommendation decision-ready, and follow up with measurable outcomes so trust is built through transparency and delivery.
